I think it was after the 2002 season that we had the opportunity to take Bolton in the pre season draft. He had indicated publicly that he wanted to go home to Sydney after a few years at Brisbane. We passed altogether as I recall and Bolton got his wish.

The thing I couldn't understand was that the public reason given by the Tigers was that we couldn't aford to offer the few 10's of thousands that Bolton sought over the min player payment payable, for a player of his age and experience.Yet this was just after we had made a highly publicised offer to Lappin to join us. As we know he didn't so where did the money go..?

I hadn't heard at the time that he wanted to go to Sydney, and was definitely shocked when we passed with a guy like this available. This guy is a sensational defender, always fights out of his division, and usually wins.

His preference was definately Sydney.

RU, I wasn't disagreeing, just saying that I hadn't heard about it, which explains why I was shocked at the time that we didn't pick him.

We should have taken him no doubt. Even if he wanted to go home I think he was from the NSW Rams but still we should have taken him.

Apologies there Disco. I remember being disappointed at the time as well.  One wonders whether our recruiting of Morrison in 2003 was on the back of Bolton blossoming at Sydney?

Yeah, maybe. I think the theory behind getting Morrison was good (being blocked by Brown, in an organisation well known for player development), but the practice, not so much.

True, a mate of mine played alot of footy with him through the juniors too.

Still living in Canberra ToO?

Always enjoy your posts Disco.

(I think I've become obsessed by those breasts.)

BTW, jb03 got it right.

Haven't we all Phantom! Those puppies are right off the top shelf and would get my vote for Avatar of the century.

Great stuff Disco ;)

The point of my q was we must have had the money b/c we had just missed out on Lappin. So why didn't we take Bolton before Syd had the chance to do so?

I don't know if we did have the money. It was only a year later that the financial chasm appeared.

I don't recall money being the issue. The Swans was his preffered destination.

Anyway, that would of been mine if I knew Spud was coaching the Tigers. ;D

Just a long shot, but maybe the money went to condominiums.

It was preseason draft time.He couldn't get to Sydney unless we refused to meet his salary demand which was evidently put at several 10,000 of dollars above the min payable for a player of his age and exp.(maybe$150,000.)

We said no to this and the reason given was that we couldn't afford this sum, ie the several 10,000$ over the min, (but could afford him at minimum payment.)

We had just missed out on persuading Lappin to go into the pre-season draft and he instead came to agree to Carltons terms to a new 3 yr contract. What I didn't understand then and now is if we had the $250,000 plus needed to attract and sign Lappin, why we didn't use the considerably lesser sum we would have needed to snap up Bolton,..before he had the opportunity to get to Sydney?

We missed out on an absolute bargain. :-\.

If he wanted to go to Sydney, and had told the RFC as much, we could have at least grabbed him on a one year deal and traded him to Sydney for a pick or whatever the following year. That would have been better than passing altogether.
