Am watching the Melbourne v Nth game on Foxtel. The Dees make us look like the Harlem Globetrotters. Given Craig Cameron has overseen the bulk of the list, why the unbridled joy with his acquisition (other than it means Miller won't be recruiting)? Look, it could be a number of factors but perhaps Phantom or someone else whom spends a bit of time on talent identification may be able to shed some light.

I think Daniher is largely to blame. They've kept a few senior players too long, like Neitz and Robertson, white looks a shadow of himself as well. I remember Daniher said after they made the GF that the list they had wasn't good enough to win a premiership to the Melb board, so they went about trying to retool for another run. Cameron was part of that too wasn't he?

They've been picking from a reasonable distance back in the draft for quite a while as well, given that they had a decent run of finals appearances for a few years, keeping veterans too long, and picking mid range consistently probably catches up over time, also with a football budget that was as small/smaller than ours.

Thanks General Lee. That makes some sense. I guess that unless you are in the inner sanctum it is hard to know who is responsible for what. At the end of the day though, the coach has to carry the can and fair enough.

Francis Jackson is still the head of recruiting. I wouldn't worry too much.

He is in charge of list management though? Surely he must have a big input on what players we draft/acquire and those we boot or is it more ... we need 2 smalls, 3 KPDs etc ?

Who at the club took the decision to appoint Craig? Is there like a press release with a smiling face on it?

as far as list structure goes i think melbourne are fine. 22 genuine talls inside types big bodies 5 ruckmen. perhaps they lack quick skillful small onballers.
its the quality of player that is in question. i havent done a phantom like spread sheet on them. 26 of their list are 22yo or under. 33 are 24yo or under.like us they have few 23 24 25 26 27 28 yr olds 12 all up i think.. they have 6 30 yr olds i think if you took out those 30 yr olds you will find they have a very young list. blokes like nietz yze holland white mcdonald are past it.

Thanks Claw. My observation of Melbourne is they don't seem do have a particular aspect such as speed, physical, skills etc. They seem to 5/10 in every class.

This is what I've been saying. Cameron has actually identified the type of players they need, he's just fallen down partly in the recruiting aspect, although he has had some wins (Maclean, Jones). We've got Francis Jackson for the recruiting. While Cameron will oversee Jackson its still up to Jackson to identify the actual players, something he has proven good at.

And after Cameron and Jackson have done their thing, it's up to the coach to get the best out of the players ... another area we're I think we've fallen well short of the mark, from both a player development perspective and game day coaching perspective.

im inclined to agree. anyway noone not even donald duck could be worse than miller.
what i would like to see happen is we find another jackson type and put him in charge of the west coast northern territory soth aust. a bit like what hawthorn have done with buckenara who does the above and wright who looks after vic qld nsw tas.
our two blokes would then report back to cameron.

Neville Stbbard anyone ??? H e has left the 'boners after quite a few years & is available.
He has been head of recruiting there for a long time & knows the caper VERY well.

Bit early to go the crow on that isn't it? His first draft, 2005, is proving an abysmal failure. It's pretty obvious JON isn't up to it, the jury is well and truly out on Hughes, and Casserley hasn't played a single game in 2 and a bit years and was in the Coburg reserves yesterday FFS! 2006 draft looks better and too early to tell on 2007 but it's definitely too early to claim proof that Jackson's good at talent spotting.

Definitely worth a look at it. North have been an extremely competitive team (including 2 flags) during his 15 year tenure as Recruiting Manager. All on a shoestring budget as well. Still can't work out why they booted him. Brayshaw is being very abrasive about the whole thing and his mates on the Footy Show let him get away with it.

Greg Miller might even give him a reference

He was in an unpaid role in 2005 IIRC. His first real draft was 2006.
