You know the Paine selection is wrong when the Poms are saying what a great selection it is.....

He's had it for years.

Best keeper in the land. Great selection given everyone else was failing.
Most of the experts have said that for many years I believe and other then his finger/hand injuries he would have been our keeper for a while now. However when a player hasn’t been doing his craft for basically 3 seasons and gets called up to keep for his country, well I think no matter the results Paine has ,that it has to be one of the most ridiculous selection theories in world sport.

I think there’s 2 key things with selections for the Australian cricket team now. 1 our depth of top line cricketers that we were accustomed too is depleted as it’s been in a long time and 2 it’s clear the selection committee have very little set rules and criteria to be selected, it appears they simply go on gut feel. One other thing for me is I see Steve Smith as the poorest Captain we have had, yes like Clarke does well leading by example as a batsman, however for me that’s it. Fact is this country’s Cricket status has plummeted in recent years, don’t think they way Lehman an co g about it is going to pull us out of this slump.

In saying that I’m sure our bowlers will get the job done, cmon Aussie

He's the only keeper to score 50 this year.

Did it twice against good attacks - England and Victoria.

Add his ability behind the stumps being unquestionable.

He may well be the best keeper Leysy , I just think selecting a player who hasn’t been keeping is as rediculous as selecting a bowler who hasn’t bowled in 2 seasons because his been working on his batting. Anyway I hope he does well, one things for sure he’ll keep better then Wade.

They make it sound as if Paine hasnt kept wickets a season or 2. Maybe not in Shield cricket but hasn't he kept at state or national or international level in the T20s?

Even though Im going to the gabba test, I must confess my cricket knowledge is pretty limited.

But I'd like to add a financial angle to the experience.

A question for the blokes who understand the game,

Given the apparent selection anomalies, and the weather forecast,

could the $4 draw bet be value?

I’m just a mug barracker easy, bit like a Melbourne football club supporter, however I think it’s been said both teams strengths are there bowling line ups and the swinging conditions of the Gabba should suit both bowling line ups, meaning it lessons the chance of the draw unless it is forecasted for a heap of rain. I stand corrected on all of the above

One thing you can bet on is Australia won't lose. We haven't lost a Gabba Test since 1988, and that was against a bowling attack of Marshall, Ambrose, Patterson and Walsh, and a batting line-up including Greenidge, Haynes, Richardson and Richards. The long range forecast has 'possible shower' for the first two days and 'shower or two' for the third. With only seven Gabba draws in the past 33 years, unless you have a better forecast saying a day or more will be lost to rain, I'd say $1.77 for Australia to win is the best bet.

Bancroft has been keeping for Wa.

I hope Paine does well, he deserves his chance. If Renshaw can re-gain some form or another opener like Weatherald can continue to make runs, it would be could to see Bancroft drop down the order and keep wickets at some stage.

No. Australia are a result team even moreso at the Gabba. When i go to the test cricket i watch the first over and then find my way to a bar with TAB facilities and punt for the day. You can watch the TV for the replays of the highlights.

Gideon Haigh's take on the selections, pouring cold water on the claims of Paine being the best gloveman:
