Stokes 'doesn't worry' Lyon
FORMER English captain Michael Vaughan labelled Nathan Lyon’s comments about Matt Prior “pathetic”.
Now Prior has responded to Lyon’s accusation the former English keeper ran “scared” when he was stood down from the final two tests of the 2013-13 Ashes series when Mitchell Johnson terrorised England on the way to a 5-0 series sweep.
Lyon told English press on Monday Australia is out to “end careers” of English players this summer — pointing to the long-term consequences Johnson’s bowling had on the tourists four years ago.
Ahead of the first Test in Brisbane from Thursday, the off-spinner said many in the England squad remain haunted by Johnson’s 37-wicket assault, taking aim at captain Joe Root who was axed for the final Test in Sydney.
“I know Root got dropped last time when he was here, so it’d be good to get him dropped again wouldn’t it? If we can start by opening up that crack, it’s pretty crucial,” Lyon told reporters.

“There’s a lot of scars for the English guys, especially coming over here, especially when we have two guys bowling 150ks (93 mph), not just one now,” he added, referring to Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins.
On the 2013-2014 tour, Jonathan Trott was sent home with stress-related illness after the first Test, while Graeme Swann abruptly retired mid-series.
Coach Andy Flower was sacked following the Ashes thrashing and wicketkeeper Prior was dropped for the last two Tests, with Lyon claiming he was “scared”.
“Leading into Perth we knew... Matt Prior wanted to fly home before the game started and he was one of the senior players,” said Lyon, one of three players remaining from that side.
“He was scared. It’s four years ago. I think he’s all right now.”
Prior initially laughed off the taunts.
“If that was the case and I was scared, why didn’t I go home then?” he told Britain’s Daily Mail.
“That’s completely ridiculous and all I can do is laugh. It’s wholeheartedly untrue. I stayed out there and what hurt me more was that I got dropped for the last two Tests.”
However, Prior showed his true emotion over the accusations on Tuesday evening when he took to Twitter to publicly rebuke Lyon and wish him misfortune for the summer ahead.
“Last time someone spouted a whole lost of BS about me I stayed quiet, not this time,” Prior posted on his Twitter account.
“To be clear I may have been playing badly fair enough but there was no way I was getting on a plane home. You’ve embarrassed yourself.
“This game has a funny way of biting back.
“I sincerely hope you’re not part of a losing @CricketAus team on home soil @NathLyon421. I still remember being sat on the outfield at the SCG after winning 3-1 while your press&fans were tearing into the Oz players. You want to end careers? Just make sure it’s not yours that ends.”
Johnson himself addressed the scandal on Wednesday night, saying
“On that Prior incident on What Nathan said. I think we all heard that was going to happen, that he was going to go home so I don’t blame Nathan for coming out and saying that,” Johnson told Fox Sports News.
“Prior has come out and said that that’s not true, so we have to take his word for it I guess. The situation is Australia just have to go out there and play a game of cricket. Nathan is just baiting guys. The England Cricket team over here haven’t said anything so it doesn’t really matter what these ex-players say to be honest. The guys just have to go out there and play a bit of cricket.
“Nathan Lyon is more tongue in cheek. I don’t think he would say those kind of words.”
Meanwhile, English cricket commentators have also scolded Lyon for re-opening old wounds.
Vaughan was surprised to see Lyon speak so aggressively on the eve of the series.
Former England captain Nasser Hussain wrote in a column for The Daily Mail, Lyon’s comments appear to be a deliberate attempt to take the media spotlight off the home side after their much discussed team selection announcement last week.
“Nathan Lyon’s words are exactly the kind of thing you expect to hear before a ball goes down in an Ashes series, yet it is surprising they came from him,” the man who led England to a 4-1 defeat in 2002/03 wrote.
“Maybe he was trying to deflect from the bad week Australia have had as far as selection has gone, and a few of their ex-cricketers in Allan Border, Shane Warne and Stuart MacGill turning on their selectors.
“Maybe he was trying to get the heat back on England but it was a an odd thing to say — especially the historical stuff about Matt Prior.
“So yes, it’s an odd fight to pick, but it is part and parcel of what happens in Australia. When you land you are taking on a nation and in the media you are always the worst team that’s ever toured.
“Lyon says an Ashes tour can be a career-ending one. It can also be a career-defining one.”
