Smith is on another plane. I have never seen a batsman so absolutely determined to never, ever, EVER get himself out. His patience, discipline, shot selection and knowledge of exactly where his off stump is, is beyond anything I've ever seen. (It helps he has the eye of a dead fish and can afford to walk across his stumps, picking off anything aimed at them.)

And to think I used to be the only one here who thought he could bat. ;D

Smith will finish up better than Ponting IMO.

Someone posted these numbers on Twitter the other day..pretty compelling

Ponting after 57 tests
91 innings 12 not out
3653 runs, 11 x 100s
ave 46.24

Career ave after 168 tests 51.85

Smith after 57 tests
105 innings 15 not out
5511 runs, 21 x 100s
ave 61.23

Amazing really. Even better average as a captain (70 I think?)

I'd love to know what his stats are if his innings further down the order aren't included. Crazy to think he started his international career as a number 8 bat.

The difference between Ponting and Smith is Smith refuses to play at balls that Ponting would push hard at and often nick. He's a better player of spin, too. Ponting still ahead as a counter-attacking weapon.

I think it's above 70 if you exclude his first few tests where he played as a legspinner.

Actually, it's 62.97 for positions 3 to 6, and 69.92 for positions 3,4 and 5.

Yeah there you go. Thanks for that.

Position 5-9 averages 45
Position 3-4 averages 71

Outstanding.

Ponting also had the amazing partnership of Hayden and Langer to fall in behind of for a large part of his career.

Ricky did bat at #3 though after early doors at #6.

Also compare the teams the two of them played in.
Ponting played for 17 years, 1995-2012, and by any estimation the first 12 of those years was in one of the best teams of all time.
Smith's been playing since 2010 in a fairly turbulent time for Australian cricket and has pretty much had to carry the team's batting.

Handscomb is such a poor looking batsman. Not sure if he'll survive long term. Poor footwork, susceptible to full bowling.

An early wicket, handscomb out for 36. Heres a great opportunity for Paine.

Paine playing well 22*, putting the bad balls away, Aust 5/240.

Siddle not playing in the shield game is he injured again? The Vics are playing two spinners so maybe he's 12 man.
