PS... Anderson was hit in the same area Hughes was......see the contusion on his neck .
The resultant rupture artery for Hughes can easily re occur.
Bottom line...unecessary and makes us look poor sports.

A freak event. Happened how many times in history of cricket? At Test/First Class/Club level? Can easily occur?? Rubbish.

Tail enders are padded up to the nines, if he cannot take it do not play. Fast bowlers give it and cop it.

I can’t recall Ambrose, Marshall, Roberts and Holding going easy on our tail. And I can’t remember calling them bad sports.

It’s called Test cricket.

Rubbish?

A few examples of cricketers who have did from a ball strike.

1. P Hughes Aust 2014
2. D Randall SA 2013
3. Z Bhatti. Pak 2013
4 . A Jenkins Eng 2009. Umpire.
5 . R Lamba Ind 1998 . Fielder.

Yeah.....Na.
You cannot teach a person who has no skill at batting to become a proficient batsman.
If it was that easy we would always have a team full of great batters.
It was poor sportsmanship and reflects badly on our team .
It was also dangerous and the umpires were weak and our players are hypocritical.
No amount of protection excuses the issue as Hughes death proved.

Nonsense. If you can't learn how to play the forward defensive, backward defensive, and duck under a short ball after playing 132 tests, then you haven't practiced hard enough. He has a HS of 81 in tests, hardly "no skill".

So if you were the Chairman of the ICC, what's your proposal? Ban the short ball? Ban the short ball to number 11s? Ban the short ball to batsman who average under 10? Serious question. Like all here, would hate for another death in cricket, but how can you guarantee no more deaths in cricket?

No one had recently died when they were bowling.

I had a problem with the short pitched stuff to Anderson.
Not because it was unfair or dangerous, but because it was stupid.
We are bowling to a number 11 with cracks on the wicket on the off stump line.
Even a club level bowler would figure out the best way to get him out would be line and length.
We only one quick that realised this - Hazelwood, and he took 8 for the match.

Windies in their day must have been the worst sports ever. Turned hitting the batsman into an art form.

Anderson is a serial antagonist, he fielded right under Smith's nose when he was at the non strikers end in the Adelaide test. He was gobbing off to him, being a real nuisance. I'm glad he wasn't hurt, but quite happy that he had his cage rattled.

Not much, we would have won anyway.

Exactly. Australia is winning cos we have Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins and Lyon. And Smith.

Bancroft is averaging about 30. hardly a huge success. He did deserve his selection tho.
Paine has been inoffensive. which for our keepers is probably a success.
S. Marsh has done ok. he can bat. history says he cannot bat consistently at test level tho. he is 34. he is scoring some runs against a rubbish english attack when the opportunity could be going to someone with a future. he averaged 18 is his last 4 test series but comes straight back after injury.
M. Marsh was obviously a success in the 3rd test. but he was selected cos he can bowl. he bowled 12 overs of puffs. he scored his 1st test century after 22 innings. his record suggests he wont continue to score runs, and based on Perth his bowling wont be helpful. i dont reckon they are diong him any favours by selecting him at this point. neither his batting or bowling is up to test level. they are setting him up to fail.

these selections should be judged after the South African tour in March.

the one selection they should be praised for is Lyon. many would have had him dropped numerous times over the last few years, but they have stuck with him and it is well and truly paying off.

Job well done indeed.

Hohns and Chappell did very well as Australian selectors in previous times.
Hohns picking succesful sides in mid 90s to 2007 and Chappell in late 80s identified Waugh Healy Hughes Reid

S marsh was very good on the last India your. he won me over with some very gutsy innings.

he averaged 18. he made double figures 3 times out of 8.
in his last 5 innings he past 10 once.

if he was a no. 10 you could call that gutsy, as a top order batsman he failed.

Was at the cricket every day, have previously not been sold on M. Marsh's batting at test level, but he was outstanding. He has always scored a lot of his runs (ODI and Big Bash} through lofted drives, but in this test he scored most of his runs with classical drives and cuts, very impressive. Will be all in on him if he can score runs against the short pitch bowling he will get in the upcoming test series against South Africa.

Thought Broad was insipid he didn't want to bend his back, Anderson was bowling quicker.

classic example of the stats not telling the tale, his 2 innings at ranchi and bangalore were fantastic, cricket personified, some of the toughest conditions I've ever watched, watched the whole series. His ton in Adelaide was pretty good too.

If you bend over too far whilst bowling it can mess with the integrity of the hair gel, and no-one (see: Pretty boy) wants that!

they were good innings in tough conditions, but i think you are overplaying them.
his first 50 was in a score of 276. His 2nd 50 Handscomb scored 70odd at the other end.
he failed the other 6 innings.

i cannot think of any other Australian who would get another chance at his age. he averaged under 40 in Shield cricket to 'earn' his recall.

Walking out of the WACA at the the end of play on Sunday with some Richmond clobber on i heard a "Go Tigers" and was shocked to see it came from Simon Katich. I couldn't believe it, he was with Buck Rogers, Gerald Whateley and Jim Maxwell. I told him that i had enjoyed the article that he had written about what it meant being a Tigers supporter, he thanked me and said he was glad i enjoyed it, what a genuine down to earth bloke he is.

Just confirmed that Bird is playing in the Boxing Day test. I hope he takes a bag to show that we have bowling depth unlike the Poms.
