So the batsman no longer gets the benefit of the doubt.

Evidently not because of the umpires "soft Signal", give me a spell. The game is not about the players it's about the umpires!!!!

It cheapens the game crap like that. Claim everything when in doubt. You will most likely get the nod.

The umpire's call stands.

There is no technology yet developed that can, in all situations, conclusively override the accuracy of a human eye and brain.

Until we have the technology, leave the half baked technology to the tv commentators to push.

The umpires had doubt the ball carried, that's why they referred it. Any doubt should go to the batsman.

They guessed it was caught. They referred it. The camera couldn't overturn it due to it's limitations.. Smith was given out on a guess. Why didn't he get the benefit of the doubt? That aspect of cricket must have changed.

I always thought that the notion of technology having to conclusively prove that the on-field umpire's decision was wrong in order to overturn only applied to a DRS review.
This wasn't a DRS review and as such I'd have thought they went to the video just to get a better idea of whether or not it carried. And I reckon it didn't.
I also reckon the fielder/keeper taking the catch always knows.

What is the rule that says the batsman gets the benefit of the doubt?

31.6 Consultation by umpires
Each umpire shall answer appeals on matters within his/her own jurisdiction. If an umpire is
doubtful about any point that the other umpire may have been in a better position to see,
he/she shall consult the latter on this point of fact and shall then give the decision. If, after
consultation, there is still doubt remaining, the decision shall be Not out.

I don't understand this "Soft Signal" crap from the umpires. If the umpires aren't certain whether the ball carried, why can't they ask the the third umpire to have a look at it with out having to give an out or not out decision.
The umpires gave Smith out, but they weren't sure. If they had given him not out, i'm sure the third umpire would have given him not out as well, because the ball appeared to hit the ground, but because Smith was given out the decision remained, because it couldn't be decided 100% that the ball had hit the ground. Therefore the UMPIRE got given the benefit of the doubt!!!

Not surprisingly Smith agrees me.

"I'm not sure I'm a big fan of the ruling with the soft signal. It's hard to overturn anything," Smith said.

"We've seen a few this summer that have been pretty similar.

"If the fielder goes up and celebrates they're usually given out. If you're a bit apprehensive of what happens you're usually given not out. It's hard for them to overturn.

"I would actually like for the third umpire to have to make the decision whether it's out or not."

Jon Holland gets a guernsey for SAffa tour. Wonders will never cease.
May be because he came out in the press last week saying there must be a line through his name, so the selectors woke up and googled his 2017 form?

Great to see Carey in the Aust T20 squad, i'm a big fan, he should replace Paine in the ODI side as well.

Remarkable result in the under 19 World Cup 1/4 final. Aust won the toss and were all out for 127. The Poms after being 0/47 were rissoled for 96 with leg spinner Lloyd Pope take 8/35, from what i saw he took took at least 3 wickets with wrong'uns.

a couple of good catches by the bloke at slip as well.

Boof Lehmann is commentating with Punter and Gilly in the big bash between the Stars and the Sixers and just said that Maxwell can take the game away from sides!!!!!
Well strike me pink, why hasn't he been playing in all formats for Australia. Who doesn't like him? He's a match winner!!!

Trevor Hohns has come out and said that the 50-overs team needs a complete reinvention in terms of personnel and playing style to be a factor at next year's World Cup. I wonder whether Maxwell who has an ODI strike rate in the 120's will come into consideration.

You get the feeling Geeves doesn’t like the selection panel? And good to hear Sayers voice his opinion.

Questions need to be answered regarding the lack of communication from Australian selectors to Chadd Sayers about his omission from the South African Tour squad, according to Brett Geeves.

The South Australian fast bowler – who was part of the Ashes squad for the first two Tests this summer – yesterday vented his frustration on Adelaide radio revealing that he first learnt of his omission (in favour of Western Australia’s Jhye Richardson) on social media and was yet to speak with chairman of selectors, Trevor Hohns.

“I guess that’s one of the disappointing things, that I haven’t had a phone call to actually find out why I was left out,” he said.

“It would be nice to know.

“I found out on social media so I guess that’s one of the disappointing things.

“Not being in the touring party and being dropped from the squad, I was involved in The Ashes, was also disappointing but not to have had a chance to find out why is hard to take.

“I have tried to call him (Hohns).

“Hopefully he gets back to me tonight and I can have a chat to him and can get some clarity on how Jhye Richardson, who has only played five Shield games, was picked ahead of me.

“I’d like to know where I stand in Cricket Australia’s eyes and where I can get in their side. It’s quite hard to take at the moment.

“I’m just disappointed and just want some clarity.”

Geeves, who played two one-day internationals for Australia and was called into the Test squad twice in 2009 without pulling on the Baggy Green, told SEN Afternoons that the treatment of Sayers has been “appalling”.

“Let’s say you get sacked and you find out through scrolling Twitter or Facebook that you’re out – no one calls, you ring your boss and he doesn’t call you back,” he said.

“It’s appalling, it’s so dismal that’s it’s really hard to put into words exactly how bad it is and how bad it must be to be Chadd Sayers.

“He’s living this extraordinary hell over the past 18 months. He’s been in and out. The communication to him about where he sits has been appalling.

Geeves said that Sayers was told he was making his Test debut against Pakistan in Adelaide in 2016, until a last-minute change of plans of which he was never informed or consulted upon.

“That process ran deep – that he was in, it was done and dusted,” Geeves explained.

“He got a text message from Steve Waugh congratulating him and welcoming him into the great Australian Test brethren. And then he was out.”

“…someone needs to be held accountable for the complete lack of communication to Chadd.”

If that is true hohns should be sacked. Surely it’s not that hard to communicate with the squad and those on the fringes.

And Lehman is no more than a bogan slob so don’t expect anything intelligent to leave his mouth.

Really enjoying the Under 19's World Cup, at the 1/4 final stage, Aust beat England the other day, Pakistan beat South Africa yesterday and today Afghanistan play New Zealand. It's on fox 507, Afghanistan have started really well, after winning the toss they are 0/51 after 9 overs, their two openers are only 16 years old.
Bangladesh play India tomorrow, it's great to see Afghanistan and Bangladesh doing well at this level. Good signs for the respective countries.

Edit.

They ended up getting 309 off their 50 overs, their number 7 scored 66 off 23 balls, with 3 fours and 7 sixes :o

Afghanistan fell across the line...................they won by 202 runs. The future of cricket in Afghanistan is looking very good.
