I don't really think the result is an indication of anything given what happened during it.
Agreed. The Australian team is in crisis, but it's got nothing to do with last night's batting collapse. At least the people that like to see us lose consistently (not all of them are supporters of other teams) will be happy for a while.

It's a shameful day for Australian cricket. Smith was rightfully suspended and probably should lose the captaincy. The dearth of possible replacements is worrying.

I hope Faf and co aren't sanctimonious hypocrites.

No probably about it Spook.

Take the actual crime out of the equation, and even then it shows he doesn't have a leaders bone in his body.

Warner is almost as culpable.

Lehmann too will go. Rightly.

Agree re: Faf.

Such a dark and disappointing day in Australian Sport let alone cricket, to be cheating in our national sport. Absolute disgrace and leaves an empty feeling of liking the these players.

Personally think
Smith & Warner should be removed from any captaincy role forever.
Smith & Warner suspended from International Cricket for 12 months, that rules them out for the series v India
Smith & Warner ruled out of domestic cricket until Feb 1, that would rule them out hopefully for the BBL
Bancroft 9 month suspension.
Any other player involved I would give same sentence.
If Lehmann or any other coach involved, that should be sacked from their role as well. Lehmann does look involved.
Regardless of the win/loss table they need to win the trust of the Australian Public and Cricketing world back and a tough sentence would help. It will act as a deterrent and sends message to other nations how they should deal with ball tampering. We need to be a leader in this and not a follower of England, India and South Africa meek responses when their players got caught.

Probably right. I've barely seen a ball of this series and still haven't seen the incident, but the Smith/Lehmann mates club had already worn thin, despite me being a long time fan of both.

I can't see anyone on the side other than Paine with the chops to take over, which would put a spanner in the supposed plan to parachute Carey into the team.

I didn't realise how many saffer, Indian and English "friends" I had on social media until yesterday.

I think that is way over the tap, knighter. In the scheme of things, ball tampering is not the big of a crime. It is more the derivation and implementation of the cheating that is causing the angst.

What's the scheme of things when a deliberate decision is made by the leadership group to cheat is not a big crime? Essendon officials would love to know.

Regardless of ICC intervention, I don't see how Warner or Bancroft can play in the last test.
Further, if any other members of the 'leadership group' knew, they can't play either, preusme this includes, Lyon, Starc, & Hazelwood.
Australia would get flogged, but so be it.

Ironic that the Australian cricket team has for a long period tried to distance themselves as being away from cheating and say "its unaustralian" and this team suddenly rip that thought straight away. They have not only embarrassed the nation, they have *smile* on the dynasty that players before them have created. Look at the medis furore around Anderson potentially tampering with the ball (could also have been cleaning it) during the Ashes. How could this group think this wouldn't be a enormous issue.

Totally agree with others comments around Smith / Warner / Lehmanns arrogance, they should all go, for how long I have no idea. Judging by what Australian sport wants to hold itself to, it could be forever.

They either want to send a message that cheating is not ok for Australian cricket or they don't.

While a cricket lover, I have felt disdain for the australian cricket team for a long time. They have been an international embarassment on many occasions.

While I take no joy in sticking the boots in when a team is down, I hope the penalties are severe and we see a significant culture shift and a bit of humility in the team in the future.

For me it is comparable to the essendon saga who thought themselves untouchable and I honestly think richmond supporters would have gone for blood had it been our club.

Its been reported Starc, Hazelwood and Lyon didn't know. I just hope the investigation gets to the bottom of it. And no Warner and Bancroft cannot play. I actually find it mind boggling that Bancroft wasn't suspended by the ICC.

What an absolute disgrace, at the moment I'm ashamed to be an Australian cricket supporter. I never thought that our national team would stoop so low.
As a rule We Aussies have been loud in condemnation of cheating in all sorts of sports & here is our "Premier" national sporting team blatantly doing it.
All of those involved in this fiasco must be suspended/sacked & universally condemned for bringing Australian sport as a whole into disrepute.
If that means that our national cricket team is on its knees for an extended period of time then so be it.

The sanctions for those involved must be sufficient enough to show the extent of disgust all cricket must feel.

Steve Smith is a top class batsman but he's shown on a few occasions before this that he is a less than ideal captain. As for David Warner!!!!

I for one will not be supporting Australian cricket for quite some time to come.

worse part of it all is S. Marsh cant be dropped as we wont have a replacement. after making a few runs against an attack that would struggle on the Sheffield Shield he has again failed when the pressure is on against a decent opposition.
his career should be over after the 4th test.

Speculation that Smith is returning to Australia, i hope this isn't true he should be made to stay over there and suck it up.
