Australian way used to be pick the best 12 (6-7 bats,1 wk,4 bowlers) & then pick the captain from that group. Ponting clear #1 . Clarke , Johnson & a couple of others (Hauritz + ?) nowhere near top 12 on form over the last year. Selectors too (Hilditch esp.) need to be sent packing for failing to follow this basic tenet . Clarke needs to forget about trying to be all things to all people & external commitments & just focus getting runs . Johnson has been indulged for too long & needs to be dropped to heed the call to get that damned left arm more vertical & bowl at the stumps more. His batting has also fallen away at a time when the middle order is more vulnerable that it’s been for some time.

Yep mitch is a real worry. Can't have the spearhead of the attack being so god damned erratic. if his arm gets any lower he will take out the umpire. We need Venkatesh Prasad to work on him getting his arm higher and getting the seam coming out straight, so he can at least get a bit of movement through the air.

I don't like that about Clarke, the fact that he always looks like he is joking around and is trying to be "one of the boys". Doesn't have that air of authority about him that past skippers like AB, Tubby, Tugga and even Punter have.

They are talking about North being the next captain now. god help us.

I always thought there was a defining moment that sparked Australia's great run in recent test cricket history.

It was the day that Border gave McDermott an absolute gob-full during a test match, I think on the England tour of 89. It was early in the tour, and Border fairly gave it to him. The press had a field day, but it set a standard that seems to have been followed ever since.

Clarke was also laughing & joking around just as they were getting on a roll. Ponting has his faults but he keeps a far tighter ship than that.

Its very hard to see where our next captain is going to come from when Ponting hangs up the whites.

Totally agree. We were blessed to have Border, Taylor and Waugh in quick succession. I think Punter is OK, but he has benefited early from having a strong team. Now that the wheels are starting to fall off, things look more shakey.

And there is no one really in sight from here for the captaincy.

Yep I remember that. AB basically said enough is enough, I want to *smile* win and if it means being a prick, then so be it. And he built a dynasty as a result.

I can't recall being so frustrated watching a game of cricket.
The Lankans were cruising and dealing with our over-rated bowling hacks.
Enter Doherty.
Then Smith.
Between the two them they took wickets and arrested the run rate.
Bewdy I thought. There's a message here for the selectors.

Then - unbelievably - Clarke decided to make a double bowling change.
Johnson got spanked for 10, 10 and 8 runs in 3 overs so no pressure from his end.
Siddle was terrible. Too short and wide.
Game almost over.

But with 20 needed, I thought maybe just maybe Smith would be given a chance to get Malinga out.
But no - Clarke turned to Johnson again who promptly got dispatched - again.
For the record:
Johnson 10 overs 1/68
Smith 3 Overs 0/8
You do the maths.

This is the worst captaincy I've seen since Under 10's when the Skipper asked me to open the batting.

Good post poppa. Mind boggling at the time and even worse in hindsight. Did bring himself on though!

That was in 93 Streak as Billy didn't tour in 89 but your on the right track.

Border was good mates with the Poms especially Botham and Gower during 89 series Border made it his way not to talk to Gower at the toss or be chummy with them, this upset them as they were used to good natured banter but now Border was refusing to acknowledge Gower, Lamb, Botham etc.

If only we had someone like him around who could take over and instill a bit of *smile* into the side.

Why not? He's 29, and Ponting aside he's probably the only one with a guaranteed spot in the 11.
Fair point, hasn't had any captaincy experience at all though. He's going okay as is so no need to burden him with captaincy.

Watson is a very, very good player; however, he would be a shocking poker player as he wears his heart on his sleeve.

A good skipper needs to contain his body language and make it appear he is in control of the situation (especially if this is not the case). This is the single reason that Warne was the best test captain we never had... he bowls a half volley, smashed through covers - and smiles at the batsman to suggest that he is playing right into Warnie's hands. Genius!

Sure enough Doherty has been dropped after taking 4 wickets to make way fro Horror. No wonder Aust cricket is in trouble.

Yes he is.
If a single selectors decision could sum up everything that's wrong with Australian cricket then this is it.
I wonder if Slater and Gordon would be interested in a Class Action?
