Steve Waugh seems to think that with Greg Chappell now on the selection panel, he will push for youth. Good to see Chappell he has said that form will count more than reputations.

Lets just hope the other selectors, Hooker Hilditch in particular, can be brought in line with this thinking.

that is what he did when he was working in India. Chappell was desperate to make the tough "short term pain/long term gain" decisions, and it cost him his job because they lost when he axed a few darlings

shows he's got principles, and I reckon Waugh will be on the money

What a lot of people seem to not understand on here is that there are no draft picks to be gained from picking young talent and losing. Of course they will pick a proven performer over a young talent until such time as the young talent forces his way into the side. Martyn, Langer, Lehmann, Hayden, Gilchrist all had to bide their time until it got to the point where they simply could no longer be ignored before being regular fixtures in the national side. Didnt seem to do them too much harm. Hussey, Katich, North all had to score an absolute mountain of runs in first class cricket before finally getting their go.

true, but in reality these guys also had to break into a side that was the best in the world and didn't have many weaknesses. Its a different story now.

The problem with some of our proven performers is that they have not performed consistently for a long while, or in North's case ever, yet keep getting games. Our middle order folds like a deck of cards once the pressure is on- would we be worse giving say Khuwaja or Ferguson a game over North or Hussey? I really don't think so.

The real tragedy of sticking with the old brigade for too long is that you also mess with the potential careers of the next generation. Doherty will be 28 in a couple of weeks. People forget even Gilchrist was that old by the time he made his Test debut.

Warne was 22 when he played his first Test. So was Greg Chappell - it's no surprise he wants to give the young blokes a go.

Chappell, has a history or promoting young players in Australia. He single handedly pushed for Healy to be given the gloves in Test Match Cricket as a unheard of grade cricketer out of Queensland.

He was also a big supporter of a young Shane Warne.

It was just Kim Hughes he couldn't stand.

How about the Pakistani wicket-keeper and his dash to the UK? What do his comments tell you about the nature of Pakistan cricket and how deeply penetrated the corruption is.

Read the following article and particularly take note of the domestic one-day game mentioned and the fact that the PCB "found nothing untoward about the match". Yeah right. 123 in 6 overs would be a freak effort in 20-20, let alone a 50 over game.

Pakistan cricket administrators. What a joke.

How was the bowler who went for 78 runs off 3 overs?

Can you believe he has only played 1 first class game?

I'd of thought on that effort he would have been playing test matches by now.

Warning call on Ashes selection Will Swanton From: Sunday Herald Sun
MICHAEL Slater fears Cricket Australia's decision to announce the squad for the first Ashes Test on Monday is a blunder.
He is convinced CA is going off a week too early and, again, he's not alone.

Australia's selection for the Gabba Test is so important and delicate the suits at Jolimont St might be on the verge of a heinous crime picking the wrong XI in the rush to get it over and done with.

Because, by the end of next week, it may be painfully obvious the selection process has been a stuff-up of boot-camp proportions. And it will be too late to change it.

Mike Hussey and Marcus North are likely to be named when the squad is unveiled on the steps of the Sydney Opera House tomorrow. They might also go out and cough up a couple of ducks for Western Australia later in the week.

What if they fail while Callum Ferguson and/or Usman Khawaja make tons for Australia A? That will be an outright embarrassment.

Injury concerns hover over Michael Clarke, Doug Bollinger and Simon Katich. The selectors are expected to name a list of up to 15 players. Why bother? It won't prove anything.

COMMON VIEW

SLATER, the former Test opener and member of the Channel 9 commentary team, attended a function with one of Australia's four selectors, Greg Chappell, last week. He raised the issue and its obvious problems.

Why can't the selectors be given the opportunity to watch every candidate before picking the Ashes squad?

The team is not due to assemble in Brisbane until Sunday anyway. Six Shield teams, comprising 66 players, will be in action next week. Plus Australia A versus England in Hobart. Why pick the side before the auditions? Why?

"I just don't get it," Slater said. "I did mention it to Greg. He said it was something Cricket Australia had pencilled in. That it was in the diary so the selectors had to work around it.

"It's going to look pretty stupid if guys already in the team are struggling next week."

THE CRICKET AUSTRALIA VIEW

CRICKET Australia's operations department locked in the date in August. Marketing commitments have since made a change impossible. Test captain Ricky Ponting and his deputy, Clarke, signed off on the deal.

"It's about the team getting advance notice and being distracted as little as possible coming into the Test," said Peter Young, CA's general manager of public affairs.

"Players have a deadline where a lot of off-field commitments will end without last-minute surprises about shooting advertisements, attend media events, etc.

"Our operational people suggested to the selection panel that the team was named on the 15th, and it was accepted.

"By the end of the Shield games next Saturday night, we wouldn't have time to take care of logistics like team apparel, team uniforms, everything."

THE PLAYERS' VIEW

CLARKE understands where Slater is coming from. But he also wants early confirmation of his selection ASAP.

Every off-field duty, from media conferences to Vodafone launch functions to Channel 9 grabs to signing bats, can be taken care of this week instead of next.

"I personally think the earlier the better for knowing you're in the squad," Clarke said. "For the guys chosen, you can concentrate on the Test itself instead of wondering if you're going to be there at all."

THE OPERA HOUSE

THERE'S been criticism for staging the announcement as a public extravaganza at the Opera House. That Cricket Australia will turn Circus Oz for a day. That the winners should be announced by one of those David Boon VB dolls instead of selection chairman Andrew Hilditch.

"We just wanted the public to be involved," Young said.

THE AFTERMATH

ACCORDING to Slater, angst about the timing and nature of the announcement will be the last of the pessimism surrounding Australia's Ashes campaign. "Players are upset because they feel like everyone is on their back," Slater said.

"But I do think there will be a change of mood next week. I There's going to be 24 more hours of debate but then the country will rally. The mood will turn."

"There will be absolute support from the Australian public for the Australian team. For now, though great theatre."

CA, you are a joke.

Probably announcing the team early so they can name the same 12 therefore bypassing any demand for selection of any new talent that may stake a serious claim in the Australia A verse England game.

Its become more than laughable.

Had to laugh at Clarks comments re Hauritz yesterday after hed been pasted all over the park by the Vics with contempt..................... "hes slowly winding up "or somthing to that effect, they will just not stop sticking up for their mates will they.

We know damn well Hussey, North Haddin and Hauritz will all be named so no point bothering to discuss it any more.

CA, you are a joke.
The horse is lagging a long way behind the cart.

Dunno I reckon support is waning. This story is a joke, CA and the players are completely *smile* up.

Go poms.

I am baffled by the pro Poms train of thought because CA are perceived as idiots. Why would you want the Australian cricket team to fail because you don't like the administration?

Would you barrack for another team if you didnt like the RFC admin?

:clap

Poor sports really. We dominated the Poms for a long time, the roles might be about to be reversed.

However, despite all the pessimism on here, I still think we will win the series.

The squad's been named, all 17 of them:

Simon Katich, Shane Watson, Ricky Ponting (capt), Michael Clarke, Michael Hussey, Marcus North, Usman Khawaja, Callum Ferguson, Brad Haddin (wk), Steven Smith, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Hauritz, Xavier Doherty, Ryan Harris, Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus, Doug Bollinger.

Good to see Smith, Khawaja and Ferguson named, interestingly no Phil Hughes.
