This is a good point. With only 4 bowlers they rely massively on Swan to bowl tightly at one end for long periods whilst picking up wickets. It means they can attack with shortish spells from the other end with the 3 pace bowlers. If through necessity these 3 are needed to bowl more overs than ideal in tough conditions the cutting edge of every bowler will greatly suffer.

It is clear from Aus's intent in the 1st test against Swan that they know this.

Make no mistake if Swann continues to go for runs England will end with a worse attack than ours as the summer rolls on.
Certainly the way we played Swann was a big positive.

Here we go, a potential bat/keeper

Geelong Grammar v Melbourne Grammar 1st x1

Jarryd Garner
178 off 96 balls, 18 fours, 11 sixes, 117 minutes.
He had 38 dot balls and 22 singles
Strike Rate 185.42.
One broken window.
One lost ball.
One ball retrieved from the park over Domain Road.
One rooster on the Chapel steeple lucky to still be in place.
He then kept for 50 overs and made two dismissals including a stumping.

Agree with the comments on the pitch. Peter Roebuck wrote a good piece on it today.

Not good when you see the GABBA on day five almost empty except for the Barmy Army in what has been a highly anticipated series.

We need result wickets.

Anyway, how would prepare a wicket to favour the Aussies?

There's been a bit of over-reaction around the country from perenially spoilt Aus cricket fans for navy.

Agree with this.

I'm actually enjoying the contest a lot, far more interesting cricket than just a few short years ago when we were dominating all and sundry.
Some were complaining not too long ago that it was boring see us win, yet now we're struggling they're still complaining.
Between this and the recent Indian series it's reignited a bit of interest in me when my passion was waining.

BTW the Aussies are still right in this I reckon.
Bring on Adelaide.

Yep
If we prepare a green top, they'll win. If we prepare a spinners wicket Swann will dominate. If we prepare a flat batting wicket :o

Not sure a green top is advantage England. Would give us more chance then a flat track or a spinning deck.

We just need a deck that won't get better on day 5 then it was on day 1. The Gabba pitch was a shocker. The English second dig was the best time to bat. Days 3,4 and 5 should not be like that in any case.

Having seen some of the garbage that has come out in the English press over the last 24 hours, I'd say

1) I I really hope we win the Ashes and stick it up them.
2) The Hun has no mortgage on crap journalists or those that like to think they are journalists

True. However, we need to win the series to get the urn back so we certainly can't have 5 tests played on roads like the GABBA thats for sure.

l don't think it is,isn't the centre area really muddy during footy season?

I thought it was, got a feeling that they changed everything when they removed the dog track

Think the calls for mass changes to the team are a bit over the top.

Had the game gone any longer, the way Watson and particularly Ponting were batting, we could have easily ended up 1/300+ also.

For me, Johnson stays, but they stop protecting him by bowling him first change. Give him the new pill, and tell him to let rip. 4-5 over bursts at full speed.

If he doesnt know where its going to land, it'll be just as hard for the batsmen. I'm a Hilfy fan, but maybe time to give Harris a look in while he is fit (only a matter of time before he breaks down again, so might as well get some overs out of him now).

Had the game had any more time than the five days allocated, England would not have declared when they did and gone on to about 3/800. How embarrassing would that have been?

Agree with how Johnson should be played, but think it would be too risky NOT to drop him now.

Look, I still think alot of Australian cricket fans are having a hard time coming to grips with the retirements of several champion players and accepting that their replacements are going to be found wanting. After day 3, I had some friends on facebook with statuses such as "Ashes are ours", and "Series all over". My God, how moronic. They are a bit more quiet now.

People forget what a luxury it was to have Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath in the same team. They were both once-in-a-lifetime bowlers and the fact that they were of opposite styles meant we almost always had at least one legendary bowler in favourable conditions at our disposal - no matter what the conditions.

Sure, Hayden, Gilchrist and few others were great players, but SW and GM were what made the team what it was. Without them we would have been on a par with the better Test sides of the day. With them we were unbeatable. Now we are without them and a few others and it shows. Get used to it.

Having said that the selectors have been disgraceful in their unwillingness to blood younger players. I read somewhere today that Ryan Harris is already 31! Where are all the 22 year olds?

Problem with Johnson is he gets zero movement in the air or off the seam. Batsmen don't chase his wide *smile* anymore so he doesn't get his cheap wickets. Unless he can start to swing and seam it, he will continue to be cannon fodder.
