And to think Cook arrived here with a big question mark over his spot in the side. We haven't looked like getting him out.

Yep. 3/800 in past 2 innings is not a good look. We lack penetration with the ball and steel with the bat. Going to be a long summer

We don't exactly support our bowlers very well though. We miss chances, and some of the fields we have been employing lack conviction.

This whole thing is starting to resemble two previous eras. Australia in the mid-80s, co-incidentally about three years after the retirements of a few greats; and the West Indies of the late-90s in similar circumstances following an era of domination.

In all three cases the selectors did not turn over replacement players quick enough in order to find the right younger players to come in, and persisted with older players in the mistaken belief that they were as good as the blokes they replaced (gee what does THAT remind you of?). Australia of the mid-80s also had the South African rebels to deal with though.

This is only going to get uglier and it won't surprise me if Ponting retires mid-series.

It's safe to say the era that began with Allan Border hauling a bunch of triers and unproven talents up from Richmondesque levels of incompetence to near the top of the world - a job completed by Mark Taylor's team, which became Steve Waugh's colossus - is over. For the first time since the mid-80s we have to completely rebuild. And the only way to do it is with youth.

its fair to say he was out of form but his spot in the team was never in doubt

a lot of what you say is correct 159, but you read Ponting very incorrectly if you think he is a quitter.

If there's one thing he's not its that.

I agree with this.

My opinion is it should be Punters last test though.

When we lose the Ashes yet again, it should signal a new dawn, rip up the team and blood the kids.

Neither of which is going to happen. Cox, Boon, Hilditch etc just dont have the courage because if they did they would have done it during the last 12 months. They've left it too late now for now, would be like admitting they were wrong. Maybe after the Ashes but even then they wouldnt have the balls.

Who would you have as captain Bob?

Geez if the Aussies lose this series, Ponting is going to have an awful captains legacy, especially against the Poms.

Despite not having the team of his predessors, his record is quite probably apt and appropriately reflective of his poor captaincy.

Cam White needs to come straight in to the team and be appointed vice captain right now so that if Ponting does retire at the end of this series he can take over. White ticks a lot more boxes than any other player playing 1st class cricket for the captains role.

How would Waugh go with this current team JB?

He would captain them far better.

You can defend him all you want because he is Tasmanian but anyone with any knowledge of the game can see his captaincy is poor in relation to his predecessors.

Don't think White's batting form is good enough.

Captain A -

Matches - 57
Wins - 41
Winning % - 71.93

Captain B -

Matches - 35
Wins - 27
Winning % - 77.14

Who are they JB?

What's the money that North makes runs in the 2nd dig? This will then make his continued selection of him ( when unwarranted) even more of an issue as to what to do with him for the 3rd test. Of course our weak willed selectors will chose him for the 3rd test if he does make runs.

Also, as predicted, the selectors Cox, Boon etc have just about killed Dohertys career before it even gets to start. Choosing him pretty much based on a good 1 ODI was pretty poor. Not that Hauritz would be doing much better but at least it would have saved Doherty from this inglorious opportunity.

A new captain needs to be developed. To be totally frank, Ponting has not been a success as captain. We are now at our lowest ebb since the late 80's and we look left and right and see no future in sight.

If it were up to me, the only players to be retained in our test team for the next tour would be Watson, Haddin, Siddell, Harris. So for our next captain, we have to look outside the square. Someone young enough to contribute to our next era, but someone with a bit of experience and natural leadership.

Let me watch a summer of state cricket before I give you a definite answer.

One things for sure, what needs to be done is a total blow up of this cricketing side.

We are impotent in our bowling, and disgraceful in our batting. Our fielding is now a laughable part of our game. Ricky's field placings and decisions have been beyond questionable. He looks like a defeated man with no answers. If he had any idea for whats best for our nation, not for himself, he would stand down himself. This isn't about being a quitter, but doing what's best for Australian Cricket.
