Good to see a batsman finally stand up for selection in the NSW V SA game.

Unfortunately it was Nathan Hauritz with a well-timed century.

Perhaps he can replace North at number 6 and bowl part-time offies.

We really are in the poo at the moment.

he has scored more runs than either hughes or smith this shield season. in one innings.

Hughes is supposedly a monty to be picked but he has no form - is that doing him any favours? Shaun Marsh is in great form and getting huge praise from Micky Arthur (as naturally gifted a ball striker as AB De Villiers). 339 runs @ 84 from four first-class knocks this season, including one ton and two 50s. Perth is his home ground. He's a Marsh. I'd pick him as an opener, even though he doesn't bat there in first-class cricket. Neither did his old man. Copeland must play. Steve Smith too, and either O'Keefe or Hauritz for Doherty. Hopefully Johnson finds some pace, direction and swing this weekend.

Agree, Marsh seems the obvious one. Need to reward form.

As for Johnson, I read that he may not play in the sheffield Shield this weekend, to keep him fresh for the test. Ridiculous if true. He needs to get wickets, confidence and his action right in the middle.

Thats the problem with the Aussies, we keep hearing how well everyone is bowling or hitting them in the nets, but we play *smile* when it matters.

Be awesome to see him comeback and in particularly do well.
My interest in cricket has genuinely waned since he retired.

Can't see it happening though unfortunately as he is on a hiding to nothing by doing it.

With every passing game, the profiles of our former great cricketers from those dominant two decades, grows significantly.

That is ludicrous. Johnson needs more bowling, not less.

I prefer watching World Series Classics on FoxSports than live games these days. Cricket just doesn't excite me now the way it did.

However, it still pisses me off when we lose!

Johnson needs his technique sorted. He needs to work long & hard with Troy Cooley who is Australia's bowling coach & one of the best in the business to get that done.

If its not rectified yet there's no point playing him.

And there is no way in the world it could be rectified over the course of two weeks IMO.

u dont want hughes to play cos he has no runs on the board this season, but your happy for smith to play?

Agree with that.

It could be Phil. Something just has to click and bang, he's a weapon again. With his action though, things just have to be slightly out and he's useless. He's very much a rhythm bowler for mine, that's why I say he needs a lot of bowling.

Did you see the 3rd final from the 88/89 series last night? Aussies struggling until the rain came and reduced the game to 38 overs. They came out blazing and smashed around 130 in the last 13 overs from the likes of Ambrose, Marshall and Walsh. One of the great one-day knocks by Dean Jones, shades of Stan MCabe. Then after a couple of early wickets, Viv took our bowlers apart. What a destructor. The rain came again and WI's target was reduced to 108 from 18 overs, which they got with about four overs to spare. Duckworth-Lewis would have set them a far sterner target. That was the closest we got to beating them back then. We won the first final at the G by two runs (I was there) thanks to AB's great 70-odd and match-saving full-length dive at extra cover on the last ball. They destroyed us in game two, although we went down swinging, but in game three we took it right up to them. We had some tough players back then: Border, Boon, Marsh, Jones, Waugh, Healy, Hughes, even Peter Taylor. Stomach for a fight. Took us from the bottom to the top, that core. Time to find their heirs.

I won't be unhappy if Hughes gets picked. Smith to me is like Steve Waugh 25 years ago - young and talented enough to just throw him in. He rose to the occasion against Pakistan, and scored a brilliant 59 on a greentop for Aus A in Hobart.
