Cricket

Johnson’s bowling arm has been getting lower & lower for the last 12 months ,at least , so can’t see that any more time with the incumbent bowling coach will be of much use . Better to have some fresh eyes (new WA coach , Mickey Arthur etc) look & work on it @ training & matches rather than at the nets. Wasn’t he one of Lillee’s discoveries initially ? Should get DK to work with him (& other bowlers) again on a regular basis.

Ought to be a shakeup/shakeout of the national coaches @ the end of the season. Realise it’s not an easy job but Tim Neilson never inspired any confidence (imo) & can only remember him being a moderate success @ Shield level anyway. Bowling coach Cooley also a disappointment , given the raps received for England’s 2005 Ashes win. As for fielding , where do you start ? England very sharp & taken 90% min. of their opportunities while we’ve always looked on our heels & never near any ½ chances to convert into wickets.

Share the concerns over Harris . I’d send all the test squad back to play State (Qld , WA , VIC) & grade cricket this week . Anyone who doesn’t play or starts & doesn’t get through their games should then be scratched for the Perth test. ….Hauritz just out for 146 , NSW 7/378 , 190 lead v SA .

Think Johnson listening to too many different people has had a large bearing on getting him into this mess.

Dont disagree that a change of coaching staff is a bad thing though.

Former England batting coach Dene Hills starts as assistant coach & team analyst for the Australian team this week after being poached back home. He's done a world of good for Trott, Bell & Strauss in recent times.

I remember reading somewhere that former Indian bowler Venkatesh Prasad was going to become our bowling coach. Also thought that Dizzy was going to be involved somehow as well.

Not sure what the answer is to Johnson's woes.

I don't agree on dropping Doherty.

We need a spinner for Perth, and he is still the best we have.
He's not, and he never was.

On the coaching, what an embarrassment that we're chasing the Poms. Cooley helps them beat us, so we have to have him. Now they have Saker, who I daresay is a better bowling coach - was certainly a better, smarter bowler, although I appreciate the two aren't necessarily aligned. We'll poach him next and they'll have Damien Fleming. What is Hills' role with us? Langer is the batting coach. Giving Nielsen a three-year contract 12 months ago, just after we lost the Ashes, is typical of the complacency that has landed us in this mess, as was the failure to back young talent and continue to pick a journeyman like North, who everyone including himself and Ponting admits has always been a hit-and-miss player. That's going to change at 31!?!?! At Test level????!

We used to lead the world in training, coaching, innovation and commitment to the cause. Now our players play for pay cheques ahead of preparing for their country (to be fair to Hussey and Bollinger the board - unbelievably - forced them to), our board is happy to warm up for Tests with T20, as long as the bucks roll in, and other countries are showing us a clean pair of heels when it comes to new ideas and methods. We're copping all we deserve and it ain't over yet.

A spell with WA & he can return to Aust side when he's bowling decent.

Rearranging the fixture schedule to have the Test squad play more Shield cricket wouldn’t go astray either . Can only be a good thing for the experienced folk & youth alike as a benchmark of standards & bridge to higher representation , as it used to be..

This, this! A thousand times this!

Our shield system desparately needs the standard to be raised in oreder for Australia to climb the world rankings. Forget about the one day version of the game and have the test team play 3 or 4 state games (maybe 2 for the fast bowlers depending on form) in the lead up to the Test series and maybe play a PM's 11 as well. The more cricket in the longer versions of the game prior to a series the better

I didn't actually see Inside Cricket last night, but I was just sent this transcript of Mark waugh getting stuck into the Aussies...would have been great to see:

Brendan Julian “So where do we go from here boys, Junior what do you reckon?”
Mark Waugh “Mate if I was a selector there are at least five, maybe six, of those blokes who’d be looking for something to do next week, because they wouldn’t be playing cricket in Perth.”
Damien Fleming “Such as?”
Waugh “Mate, Doherty for a start. I mean jeez, we’ve picked a bloke because we don’t know who our spinner should be. Should we seriously pick a guy who has played 10 state level tests in his life to go up against Pietersen, Cooke and those guys?”
Julian “Bit harsh”
Waugh “Bit harsh? He was chucking that many pies at Pietersen he may as well have opened a bakery on days 2 and 3.”
Fleming “North?”
Waugh “Gone”
Julian “Bollinger? Siddle?”
Waugh “Gone”
Gladstone Small “ Can I interrupt for a minute?”
Waugh “No”
Julian “Junior is on a bit of a roll here Stone”
Waugh “No I mean fair go, we’ve got it wrong here. If I’m the only bloke not happy that we’ve been rolled for an innings and 70 odd runs on a runway of a pitch and that lets be honest we’re going to have a summer of the poms handing us our ars&s in this series then fair go boys, something’s wrong here. What’s Clarke doing after getting out? He’s on twitter saying sorry for not walking? Mate if he did that in our side there’d be hell to play. AB would chuck his twitter box off the balcony or whatever it is. Sorry for not walking? jesus christ man

not much wrong with any of that

siddle and bollinger are the best we have though

Because its looking back, not forward and is very short term and reeks of desperation. Reminds me of the Poms talking about getting Botham out of retirement in the early 90's.

Hilfenhaus is ahead of either of them, woefully treated by being dropped for the 2nd test.

Yeah but it was only 1 match, the previous series he'd been good. This is one of the problems with this selection panel, inconsistency, some players they keep beyond all reason, others get chopped at the first sign of poor form without being given a chance.
