Because he hasn't been found out at first-class level, he's too good. He's not be the first player to have flaws revealed only at the very top level. Test cricket is not the ideal place to work on weaknesses, and I'd have Marsh in the side instead, but that's not the way they've gone. I would like to have seen him given the chance to work out his game at the lower level but now that they've picked him again doing that would be deemed dropping him for a second time. Between now and August he needs to work on that back foot and those outside-off jabs. I think the selectors have wasted the chance to blood a talented bloke like Marsh, while giving Hughes the time to work on his game at Shield level.

... against Pakistan in England in July.
Many more than that I'm tipping.
l hope your wrong

Khawaja is the ype of guy we need to push forward.

He has the fundmentals to succeed. Hughes doesnt INO.

Why bring guys forward that still need a "fair bit of work" as you say, when we have guys that dont need all that basic work.

I agree with Leysy why have guys in the test team needing work. Given he has fundamental problems with his technique why hasn't he worked them out at first class level already. His dismissal today was similar to Melbourne, he worked hard for a while (longer today than in Melbourne) but then loses concentration and goes out to an extremely poor shot.

Khawaja looks pretty good though, incredibly soft hands, I can't remember an Australian player with such soft hands.

Opener is a specialised role. Who else after Katich and Watson?

We have had the debate regarding Watson as opener on here before. He is in form, fine, leave him in the role. Katich out injured. Only choice is Hughes.

Longer term, Watson is not going to be an opener forever, and Katich will not be round for that much longer. I don't see much on the horizon.

Hughes with a suspect technique is a better bet than the other openers we have. Hopefully for him and the team he can work out the problems in his game, which I think he will do. If not, replace him, but only with a better player who has proven themselves at Shield level first.

Khawaja is no rookie. He has played 4 seasons in the NSW Shield side, scoring just over 2000 runs at just over 50. Perfect grounding for the step up to test cricket. IMO you need to pick blokes who have shown they can play at the level below before speculating on a rising talent (Tendulkar level talent excluded).

Marsh isn't an opener at first class level. As for Hughes his flaws were found out 18 months ago they're still there. How much work has been done on them.

FWIW I am a West Aussie and I have been calling for Marsh to get a go for sometime.

But having seen a bit of him, Shaun Marsh will not be a test opener IMO. He will be a good No.4 who might go to 3.

Are the flaws really still there? His first class form this year was pretty ropey, very hard to tell IMO.

Neither was his old man. Neither are Katich and Watson. Neither was David Boon.

It might be his only route into the side. He's opened plenty of times in ODIs and yes it is different, but he has the talent and the form.

They can't even get past 3 runs per over. Live pitch hey?

Hasn't everyone been on the aussies back for throwing their wickets away cheaply? It looked like they have been working on leaving the good balls which was what we wanted. I thought they showed a bit more grit, unfortunate dismissal of Hughes though, crap shot and Clarke....no grit, again.

I just can't see it Spook. Doesn't look to have the temprement for it. A very good batsmen for sure, but not an opener.

l was really impressed with Hughes, that 1 brain explosion cost him but l'm optimistic Hughes will make it as a test opener.

Likewise monty, he needs to minimise his flamboyance, get those feet in the right positions and learn to hate getting out, really hate it.

defensively, khawaja's technique is brilliant. while most aussie bats have a gate between bat and pad wide enough to drive a truck through he is tight. its good to watch
