defensively, khawaja's technique is brilliant. while most aussie bats have a gate between bat and pad wide enough to drive a truck through he is tight. its good to watch
And plays with soft hands and late. Very good signs.

I liked that he knew what to leave alone. Particularly early. That's been sadly missing this series from the Aussie bats.
As mentioned, defensively very sound and good square of the wicket.
Highlighted to me that we need to move Punter not down but out. Keep the fresh blood coming.

l'd keep Punter & get rid of Clarke,Smith & Hussey.Bring in 3 fresh bats & groom a new captain to take over from ponting in 12-24 mths.l'd like to see a specialist bat @ 6 hence why l would get rid of Smith.

Mark Cosgrove 26 yo, 21 first class tons, 39 fifties, averages 44, 7000 runs from 170 digs. If he wants it theres not many others with his record.
Ferguson might get a gig, 26, 6 tons (2 this year) 19 fifties, big knock on him is his average of 35 from 99 innings.
Cameron White 27, 16 tons, 32 fifties, 7000 runs at 42 from 189 knocks.

We could do worse than these three.

Why Hussey - he is leading the batting for Australia this series?

Give Smith more time to develop.

Clarke will return to form and will be our next Captain.

Find an opener and push Watson to 6 where his style of batting belongs.

Oh I forgot Clarke, Hussey and Smith aren't Victorians - thats why they're not good enough for you - more fool me!

Some footwork? He's feet are in the same position for almost all his shots. Front foot straight down the track, even for his pull shots! Unfortunately he's a one-day product where the ball/pitches/field restrictions/settings are all in favour of the batsman. Survives purely on a great eye. Will be shocked if he ever makes it as 6 at Test level. If he's bowling develops he could be a handy number 8.

Watson's test average batting at 6: 24.28
Watson's test average batting at 7: 14.50
Watson's test average batting at 1: 50.24

The side would be better balanced with Watson moving down the order and bowling more. IMHO overall the side would be better off. Plus his average would certainly improve from those figures which were from before he was yet to establish himself and he was in and out through injury.

Debate over.

& that doesnt even go into the arguement that openers are what we lack the most of around the country.

Tend to agree but l wouldn't rule out batting Watson @ 3 down the track if we have sold openers.Putting Watson down to 5 or 6 would be silly.

Agree with this MB. Except you could make an arguement Hussey to stay for a little bit.

As the next test is not until August we have time to make decisions on the future makeup of the side.

Pontings future will rest with how he recovers from his finger & then performs in the world cup.

Clarke is extremely lucky this is the last test of the summer as he would surely be dropped. He has just 191 runs from 13 innings at an average of 14.69 from tests this season (against India in Oct & England). This is worse even than Pontings 337 at 30.63.

Haddin too is another that needs to be pushed out over the next 12 months. Paine's leadership not to mention his ability needs to be pushed up asap.

Navy too would like to see the best long term batsman playing at No 6. Especially as watson is good for 10 overs a day to take the pressure off the frontline bowlers. Whether that is Ferguson, Khawaja, Maddinson or whoever.

On this series one thing that has really suprised navy has been the ability of Englands 2nd string bowlers that have come in.

Playing just 4 bowlers each test navy thought there was a real opportunity to tire them out as the series progressed. But even when that happened to Finn & Broad also getting injured they have brought in Tremlett & Bresnan who have both bowled exceptionally. Especially Tremlett who would be our No 1 bowler.

They have a good squad of bowlers to take them into the future.

Navy definately read that aspect of the series wrong.

Agree Navy boy,Tremlett's height has worried us & he has bowled really well. They made the right call with Finn & then bring in Bresnan.

Weve lost 2-32 this morning. We'll be lucky to make 250. Will the game finish on the fourth day or will we hang on to get beaten on the fifth?
