I wouldn't be shaking my head, his form has dropped off & easy to redo hamstring especially if he rushes back.

OK, but I would be shaking my head.

Not sure how we could say his form has dropped off. 2nd best player in the test series, one bat in ODI, made 21 in 12 balls with a torn hammy to get us back on target.

Harsh judge!

if he was fit l'd be happy for him to go,hammies are a real risk.My opinion would be the same for other players not just Hussey.

... and as others have said, we have up to 8 weeks to get him right. If we left him out today, the risk would be that he is ok in 6 weeks, but we cannot get him in unless we get someone else to fake an injury!

We'll agree to disagree

Any uncertainty as to Hilditch's incompetency as a selector has now been removed.

How the hell can you name 2 wicket-keepers in a 15-man squad, especially when you reserve the right to change the squad anyway?

The man, Hilditch, is in 2 minds with every step. Is he scared that he might offend one of them?

At the risk of defending the (possibly) indefensible, would you select Haddin only as a batsman? To me, he is probably one our best four bats at the moment. He was a bit rusty the other night, but he is a very clean striker.

disagree on this one.
paine is being selected as both a backup batsman, and backup keeper. they clearly think paine is worthy of playing purely as a batsman. im sure navy will agree.
also whilst you can change the squad you can only do it with approval, and once a change is made i dont think you can change back. so if haddin was injured and another keeper brought in, haddin couldnt then return.
also if haddin was injured the night before a crcuial game there would be no time to bring in another player.

in this case i think the selectors got it right .

l actually agree with this selection,if Haddin gets injured or form continues to slide he can come into 11.Also if a batsman is injured or out of form he is good enough to be a bat alone.

Agree Paine is good enough to play in the one day team as a specialist batsman, both wk open when they play for Australia so I think its a good move,

Fair enough.

If one of the wicket-keepers got injured and couldn't play then the rules may prevent you from replacing that wicket-keeper once the tournament has started.

If this is the rule, then the selection is justified.

In a Test series, where players can be placed anytime by a plane flight, the decision would be more questionable.

However, it is only 6 qualifying games plus finals.
It's not a full tour of Tests plus representative games.

2 wicket-keepers .....?

Paine could play as a top line batsman so l think this was one of the selectors good selections.

Good point. Poorly balanced squad. At least if we fail comprehensively his head will be closer to the chopping block.

if he was to play as a specialist bat can he even field? coz he sure as *smile* cant keep.

i was having a nice chuckle the other night when he *smile* up 3 regulation stumpings, was thinking of you navy ;D

Last world cup we took two keepers, didn't seem to unbalance the squad much.

Very true. I think some posters are getting a little emotional here.

Why does having Haddin and Paine in the squad unbalance things? Can someone give me a definitive answer.

Because when you really look at it, sure, only one can keep in any one game. But on current form around Australia, both would be in the top 12 batsmen in the country.

I wouldn't write Haddin off as a specialist batsmen for this tournament either. Paine's keeping looks more sound right now, but I could see Haddin getting a run as a No.6 batsman if Hussey doesn't come up for the World Cup.

Hadden should practise bowling some offies or medium pace. He could take Smiths spot. ;D

but can he field? as we saw on sunday night, england couldn't hide trott anywhere (i did remind him from over the fence) and we cant afford to carry blokes who cant field in the world cup
