Cricket

On England. Things are going to get a lot tougher in the world cup for Aus than the outfit they are playing against now.

Namely Sri Lanka, South Africa & India who are all clearly superior one-day teams than the Poms.

People have a dig at Australia's captaincy, but Strauss is a truelly horrible oneday skipper who is a mile behind Ponting & Clarke as a skipper in this form of the game. Has absolutely no imagination or ability to think on his feet whatsoever. He's very much from the staid & pre-programmed school of captaincy of past South African skippers Hansie Cronje & Shain Pollock.

An example is yesterday when he had Aus teetering at 4-40. One more wicket, Steve SMiths in & he's a real chance of running straight through his opponent. On a seaming wicket he still brings his spinners on at the same time he does every game rather than keep the pace bowlers on longer than what he normally would have. Horrible thought process.

Another thing, the Aus selectors have made a mountain of mistakes but a couple of decisions by the England selectors with theor one-day outfit are right up there. As Navy said pre-game 2 of their top 3 in the order are simply not good one-day players - Namely Prior & Trott.

How can Davies who was picked in the 1st one-dayer, make a better than a run a ball 42 then be completely left out of the World Cup squad days later - for a prennial one-day failure in Prior no less. Crazy stuff. Also playing Trott in the side who makes Michael Clarke's hitting ability resemble Lance Cairns. Baffling decisions that will greatly haunt their World Cup chances is navy's prediction.

Just some of the reasons they are the No 5 one-day side in the world.

I see Tremlett is not in their squad and it has got me buggered how they can consider Trott a one day player but not Cook.

For the aussies, if Ponting and M Hussey are fit there may not be room for Marsh. Ponting and Hussey in for Smith and D Hussey. Though Marsh has likely jumped in front of Paine.

Then someone for Hauritz (Smith back in, or Doherty?) and anyone for Tait who simply can't play enough cricket - and who cops an almighty bagging by Greg Baum in the Age today.

On the captaincy issue, not enough one day captains have the guts (or nous) to attack and take risks when wickets are required, often leaving the field spread only for the batting team to pick off 5 or 6 an over without pressure.

Just a wee bit of difference in the two isnt there.

Not really, both are in the side based on there batting ability. Smith is not much more then a part time one day bowler.

I would take Marsh any day of week. He is a better T20 player as well and can bat any spot between 1-6 and can be a pinch hitter.

Smith is massively overrated.

smith is in the team as a part time batsman and a part time bowler. if the top 6 were good enough we could carry him for the occasional burst of hitting, or the occasional good ball, but its not, so we cant.

Thought it was a groin injury???

The commentators were saying last night that it was a lower leg injury, this morning it has been reported that he has a thigh strain. Either way, he's out of this series and hopefully for the world Cup as well. Hopefully Nannes, Rimmington or even Christian are the replacement as we already have Johnson, Bollinger and Lee who will all probably play and supply the heat. There could be some runs against these three though, and admittedly Christian can also be expensive.

Took the $2.40 on offer last night for a NSW win.The Vics are on the skids & its time for a cleanout with Hodge,Rogers & McGain are 3 that can move on with some others also. For those that think Hodge should go to World Cup take a look at his last few innings & you'll realise his non selection was right.

its the 50 over world cup,not 20/20.
in his last 50 over match he scored a run a ball 55 against an attack including lee, bollinger and hauritz, plus stuart clarke. coming in at number 4.

but yes the vics have a terrible 20/20. cant score runs.

Understand,but still wouldn't pick him

*smile* steve smith.
a chance to cruise to an easy half century and he plays another stupid shot. lucky for him the world cup team is already picked.

Another dreadful shot

Not Tassies night tonight MB. Not sure why Paine isnt allowed to play seeing as he has missed so much cricket & isnt currently in the Aus team.
Baffling by CA.

Reckon if they get 135 they can defend it. But at 7-82 looks unlikely.

Battings been a little poor by Tas all comp. Rely heavily on Birt & Bailey to get runs. Outstanding bowling & fielding has kept them in it.
SA are also an excellent one-day team.

Tas need to get Cowan into the top of the order.

Why won't they let Paine play Navy?

Your guess is as good as mine mb.

He's played about 4 20/20 games in 3 months so hardly overplayed.

Would have thought getting as much cricket into him as possible before the world cup would be the smart thing to do.
