im surprised they are 'resting' him just as he starts to show some form again.

I am beyond wondering why the selectors pick anyone TBH.

I can't fathom it, but it must be soul destroying for a lot of the players around the country.

Can someone explain to me how the media works? Matt Prior performed an absolute prick of an act last night but barely a ripple in the paper ( 1 line in the Hun).

Hughes was hung drawn and quartered for querying a catch, Clarke was belittled for attending a breakfast on the morning of a test and also for Tweeting but a bloke can blatantly cheat and it goes unpunished.

One incident was during an Ashes series and the other in a game no one gives a toss about. Doesn't make it right but goes some way to explaining the care factor.

i think too the media reaction to the hughes incident was more about botham and his response than the actual incident.

Dont forget the powerplay was still well in vogue at that stage Scoop which when chasing a target like this needs to be taken full advantage of.

Perfect scenario to send Johnson in for a slap in a no loss scenario to make the target chasable. The fact he has gone on is a bonus.

Nice little trial for a tactic that could prove handy on the small sub-continent grounds. Especially with our bowling attack likely to let some big scores in.

Johnsons also a very clean striker who doesnt need a long time to be played in.
I reckon it's almost a no-lose tactic. Should be more of it. Otherwise there's too much 'consolidating' when the team needs to be getting on with it. Puts the other mob back on the defensive instead of allowing them to sneak in cheap overs. I'd do it every time - what do you lose? A tailender. Big deal.

Q. Who batted at #4 for Australia in the 1987 World Cup final?
A. Craig McDermott (14 off 8 balls - no lose).

Has anyone read Golden Boy: Kim Hughes and the Bad Old Days of Australian Cricket? I have read a lot of cricket books, even written a couple, and this just might be the best. Unauthorised (as in Hughes didn't want to be part of it but didn't mind if it was written without him), it shows what a shemozzle Australian cricket has been in before. Hughes should never have been captain or even vice captain ahead of Rod Marsh but what a petulant couple of *smile* Bacchus and Fot were, and what a weak leader G.Chappell was. Lillee's continual headhunting of Hughes in the nets nearly broke his arm the day before the 82/83 Ashes. Blokes like Lawson, Whitney and Hogg couldn't believe what they were seeing.

God, what a talent he was. Any kid my age wanted to be DK Lillee with the ball and KJ Hughes with the bat. Was a gun junior footballer too, just an absolute natural at pretty much any sport. Whipped Ashley Mallett 21-0 or 21-1 in squash, then changed hands and whipped him again! Excellent read, tells a story that has needed to be told for 25+ years. I love Hughes as much as I ever did. A sportsman in every sense of the word, who refused to let the bully-boys stop him doing things his way. Sometimes it's not all about numbers. As others say in the book, he was in the line of Trumper and McCabe.

Interesting article on Krezja in todays Hun implying that he's not the "easiest character to get along with in the dressing rooms" and that he had difference of opinion with Ponting and trouble bowling to Pontings set fields. Typical Tasmanians and their in-fighting ;D

The ACB should never had rescinded their rule of only one token Tasmanian in the side at ay one time.

Pinched this off George Bailey's twitter acct. :rofl

A cracking book spook...I have read it a few times. Beggars belief that those things could have been going on in the Australian cricket team. I agree, I can't think of too many cricket books I have read that are better than this one.

Tell us more Phil. I remember the criticism (and favouritism?) of Hughes being given the captaincy.

Lillee didn't like him. It's strange how later in time we all see the cold hard truth about people we all thought were best of mates.

Tough crowd here having a dig at the Apple isle.

Navy's sure Tasmanian cricket greats like David Boon, Dennis Lillee, Michael Holding, Richard Hadlee & Ricky Ponting would beg to differ.

Have a look at this link which shows the Prologue of the book, it gives a very good summation about what was going on back then. I would highly recommend it.

Nice list. ;D

& to think in just 30 years in the shield little Tas have already produced 2 cricketers that have scored more runs than anyone from Victoria. Ever.

Thank god indeed.
