Australia's first world cup starts soon. v Zimbabwe.
hopefully the aussies bat first to give a few guys the chance to make some runs.

prob the only issue for selectors is hastings v krezja. surely they will need to pick a spinner?

Yep,spinner a must

Chicken-hearted batting performance by a team that looks like it's trying to avoid losing rather than win. Ponting's fear of losing and seething anger are a negative influence. And wtf is White dong trying to bunt the ball around for singles when he can't do it? Stealing balls from a real batsman, that's what. At least Clarke showed he is capable of the type of innings necessary, and to be fair to Ponting, he did too. Worrying how much that bloke gets run out though.

To be fair to Ponting that was one amazing throw by a guy that has an arm that lets it go like a bullet. Dobt anyone else in theworld could have ran him out from there. He's been in good nick upon his return which is vital as he perenially lifts for this tournament.

Haddin & White the massive worries on these wickets. Just cant work the ball enough to take the pressure off themselves.

Can't beleive ch9 show a repeat of Crime scene investigation when Aust are playing their World Cup opener!

Absolutely. When I think of what it takes, I remember Lehmann, M Hussey and Bevan who had a great ability to hold back their shots and turn the blade to get the single when they were settling in. Whether White just has too much adrenaline and pushes too hard, I'm not sure. All I know is that it is looking ugly. T20 may be his go because you just get the license to swing from the start.

Haddin too, if the ball is darted at his pads, struggles. Loves free hands outside off.

At least one of these two needs to turn it around - quickly - for us to reach the semis.

If we struggle against the Zimbabwean spinners, lord knows how we will go against India and Sri Lanka for starters.

Should be making 300 against the minnows.

Very average performance first up.

The real issue from last night was the over conservative approach of Watson and Haddin at the start . Left far too much for the rest of the team to do . Watson turned it around later but Haddin was awful. Personally I would have Paine ahead of Haddin but I know that won't happen .
Thought Ponting was batting really well and was run out by a freak piece of fielding . Clarke played very well also .
White's form is a big concern , will have to turn it around soon.
Watch the Kiwis next match load up on the spinners. Real danger game that one.
I also agree with the commentators last night . We should have brought Johnson in as a pinch hitter early . He is a leftie and could come off with 20-30 in quick time . he looks back to good form with the bat .

I didn't watch any of it last night. What I do know is that Aus has become the most predictable of 50-over sides in the past few years. (Yes I know we have been #1, but let's put that down to a couple of geniuses of the game - Gilly/Symonds/Warne.)

We almost always take our batting and bowling powerplays at the same time. (Did we use the batting powerplay earlier last night, when the ball was hard?)

I would have been really tempted to send Mitch out to open if they knew Price was opening.

I have been a supporter of Haddins; however, it may be that he does not have a Plan B when he struggles.

After 40 overs when 4-170 or so , just after White got out . The commentary team actually mentioned this and gave the example of Dhoni who has been taking it when the ball is changed .

They kept on darting it into his pads. When he can't get room to hit his inside out shot or down the ground he has nothing at the moment . Also not a good player of spin, always plays on the back foot whereas as soon as Ponting and Clarke came in they started using their feet and looked a lot better .

Thanks.

As you say, expect NZ to use spinners early in the next game. Perhaps some innovation, with Smith/Johnson in earlier. Even Lee used to be a clean hitter

Navy agrees with everything said on last nights match. Some good intelligent posting.

Ponting also alluded to all you say after the match.

I've sort of liked the look of Luke Butterworth as an all-rounder over the past couple of seasons.

He's has an absolutely massive year with the ball Bigwow. Another big bag of 6 yesterday to be easily the leading shield wicket taker this season with 37 @ 15.

Dont think his batting is up to No 6. But he would certainly be an excellent No 8. & if he continues like this his bowling could well be considered as full-time.

Agree. The cricket thread is keeping this place afloat.

Great work over the summer lads.

Navy, I'm hearing goo0d things about Nathan Lyon from SA. They say he will play test cricket sooner rather than later. Have you watched him bowl?
