Cricket

Hey LidsBling&Cotch,

Saw today that your cricket club is playing in the Longmuir Shield Final.

I wish your team lots of luck.

I support any team the CMCA Executive doesn't actively support.

So let's hope your club wins.

they didn't have a good day. bowled out for 119 but have uniting 2/19 already. if they get a couple of early wickets and the big wicket of glen lalor they might send a scare through them and u never know. earnst is a dangerous bat for them and they cant let him 'get in'

on a positive note, my d grade team made a very good 199 against omega on a terribly slow bricker reserve and should defend them. how in gods name did the cmca think playing a granny at bricker is a good idea?

and for a richmond twist, i caught up with the ex RFC trainer chris 'dizzy' smith who helps organise the annual cricket game against omega. jack riewoldt played a d grade game just before xmas and took a bag for omega

No better or worse than the rest of the tournament. Only half-decent game was against NZ. Struggled to beat Zimbabwe. Rain saved us against Sri Lanka. Kenya and Canada - so what, and Canada did alright. It would have been very interesting if we'd been in the other group. It would not have been stretching it to imagine that we might have only beaten the Netherlands.

Tasmania all out for 434 so a 13 run lead after the first innings.

Wasnt helped by Cosgrove & Triffitt being gunned. Triffitts decision was an absolute howler, the ball wouldnt have hit the 3rd set.

NSW will be looking to set Tasmania around 200 which is never easy on a 5th day pitch.

Plenty of cricket still to be played.

Luke Butterworth coming good with the bat at the right end of the summer. Pretty good summer, wickets consistently, and runs when it counts.

Yes he's a star Bigwow. Huge season as you say.

Hilfy has knocked over Warner & Khawaja in his first couple of overs. NSW 2-10

Sat in a pub wathing some of the shield final. A more boring spectacle you would not find. Felt sorry for the commentators trying to stay awake. The highlight was the NSW keeper dropping the simplest of catches.

ON Ponting, I assume he won't spit the dummy at opposition players who don't walk after being obviously out.

Yes. I hope your team wins, not that I have anything against Omega.

As for the CMCA, we call them the East Sandy & Bentl Utg benevolent society.
Each year they change the rules to suit these teams.
Last year, when we were the superior Longmuir side, and should've hosted the GF, they gave it to East Sandy, our GF opponent. This year, as they want Bentl Utg to win, they had it on our Mackie ground.

Chris Smith is an interesting one. Heard he had a falling out with the RFC, though he's still friendly with some of the players. Of course, the traditional RFC/Omega Smith Shield day is no more.

Anyway, Richmond did play in finals, the cricketing Richmond that is.
Amazing, given the pathetic conditions the boys had to train and play in.
So many stories that I'll tell in private conversation only.
Thirds made but got beaten in the QF.
Twos won a home QF against StKilda but got beaten today in an away SF against Prahran at Toorak Pk.
So that's the end of the RCC at PR and I think everyone is better off for it, both RFC & RCC.

Cheers!

Talking about local cricket, the two garde fianls over here in the Albany competition were crackers.

The 'A' Grade final came down to batsmen No. 8 and No.11 having to make 10 runs to secure the win. After quite a few tense overs, they managed to get there. And it was my club that won, their first 'A' Grade flag :partyfest :cupgold

I myself do not play A grade, that went passed me 10 years ago :(

Almost simultaneously on the adjacent oval, the 'B' grade final was won by 3 runs. In virtually identical circumstances, two lower order batsmen had to make about 10 runs, but they couldn't.

And the best bit was that the one club lost both finals. I enjoyed that, because the week before they knocked my team out of the 'B' grade finals by dropping down 'A' Grade players to ensure the win. Their 'A' grade side had already won through to the grandfinal, and so they weren't playing.

While technically within the rules, it was very bad sportsmanship IMO. One of those who dropped down hadn't played 'B' grade all season! I couldn't believe it. Imagine dropping blokes who had played all season just to make sure you get through to the grandfinal. Karma's a *smile*.

Aren't there rules against that? In the old days the VFL had rules restricting reserve grade participation in finals. You had to have played at least 6 reserves games and no more than 6 firsts games, or something like that. I think the rules might have been waived if your senior team was playing on the same day.

You'd think so wouldn't you, but apparently not down here. I'll bet the Association didn't/doesn't even know. Our team decided not to lodge a protest. Let's face it, it is 'B' grade. If you are that desperate to win a grandfinal then good luck to you. We play for the enjoyment of the game, and we had a great season. Protesting was only going to sour that.

I am just so glad they ended up losing.

FWIW, I understand our club President will be raising it at the next Association meeting.

Gee, Katich made a bold decision in the Shield final, and then his fieldsmen let him down grassing at least two chances.
Its a done deal now for Tassie, they only need 186 today. Well done to Tassie.

Why would you walk when it could have been a no ball? To each his own but why walk? Do bowlers not call batsman back when they edge balls into their pads and get given LBW? When keepers appeal for catches they know are not out, do they call players back if they are incorrectly given? Why are batsman meant to walk when the bowling side blatantly accept wickets they know are not out?

Ponting copping it from everyone, hope he pulls out a big one against India.
