Cricket

Have been some pretty close finals in the local competitions in Melbourne over the past couple of weeks.

In Sub District which is where I played for many years, Malvern in their first final were chasing Kew's 174 and were 9/80 odd when the rain came, and therefore Kew got eliminated. Malvern have now won their way into the Grand Final against Caulfield this weekend. They are arch rivals, so that will be good viewing at Caulfield Park this weekend.

Then I saw in the VTCA Senior Division Grand Final Yarraville Club were chasing Bentleigh's 299 and got them 9 down, with the final pair putting on 27 runs. Wouldn't be too many grand finals where the team batting second has chased down 300 to win. A fantastic effort.

I am sure there are plenty more close results out there, but these were two I know about having played with and against quite a few players who participated in these games.

On whats been a good & well fought shield final, wickets have been taken with the new ball all match. Tas need to get past the first 15 overs this morning, do that & they should be OK. If not there will be plenty of twists & turns. Batting on 5th day wickets is never easy as the history of cricket shows.

Why would you walk when it could have been a no ball? To each his own but why walk? Do bowlers not call batsman back when they edge balls into their pads and get given LBW? When keepers appeal for catches they know are not out, do they call players back if they are incorrectly given? Why are batsman meant to walk when the bowling side blatantly accept wickets they know are not out?

Ponting copping it from everyone, hope he pulls out a big one against India.

I think the Indians will tear us a new one. The little master is on 99 international centuries....big show of bringing up number 100 against the Aussies, the side he seems to save his best for.

Ponting complains when the technology shows someone's not out and also doesn't budge when he hits the cover off it.
He might play hard but that sort of hypocrisy is not a good look.
Don't blame Ponting for not walking, his captaincy & form is more of a concern.

I didn't say Ponting was wrong not to walk - I wouldn't ever walk either. Just saying Pointing cannot be critical when others don't walk.

Serious question, has he been critical?

Tas 2-74 at lunch with the shield final still evenly poised going into day 2 on the 5th day.

Its been an excellent advocate for keeping the final in place.

Still very tough batting MB, pitch not easy to bat on.

There's been 27 odd wickets in 4.5 days. Would be an extraordinary choke not to win from here.

Do you think? So boring. Tassie deserved the shield outright for their fine season.

No not verbally, but gee he carries on like a goose on occassion when other stand their ground. Tooheys has already provided the evidence.

Agree, surely Tassie will win from here, only 2 wickets down.

Pitches dont stay the same as the match goes on. Its why there is a dearth of 5th day chases in cricket history.

9 wickets fell on day 4. NSW need another 10 today to win while defending 200. Odds against for sure but hardly insurmountable as decades of cricket has shown.

Anyone who has been involved in a chase to win a premiership knows that chasing runs is never a gimme.

Understand the viewings not for everyone. But it puts the players under pressure that they arent accustomed to throughout the season. That has to be a good experience for players in their quest for higher honours.

Where did he have a dig at Petersen on that footage. As he walks past he has a chat for about 2 seconds.

Think you answered your own question.

You reckon he's admonishing Petersen for not walking. Better lip reading skills than navy as it looks extremely harmless & extremely brief chat as they go past each other to navy's eye.

Old punter can't look sideways without the knockers coming out.

Thought you'd be behind sportsmen that play hard but fair & dont give an inch tooheys.

I suppose he was talking about the weather when Peterson pointed to his bat.

Old Punter brings much of it on himself.
I've been calling it for a while and have seen nothing that's changed my mind, time for old Punter to retire.

He probably asked him if he hit it.

Drawing an extremely long bow to suggest he was into Petersen for not walking.
