Cricket

Treating the selection on its own cant understand the fuss at Katich getting the chop.

Between one & two of Katich, Hussey & Ponting needed to go to make way for younger players whilst still having experience around.

As a great of the game Ponting gets an exception. Take your pick of ether or both of the remainder.

Hussey's one-day performances probably got him the nod. Though it could be argued its a good time to move him on from them as well.

It's a farce, and the selectors and everyone at CA are a bloody rabble.

Gone from the most professional cricket outfit on and off the pitch, to this absolute shambles.

Whilst Katich was past his best, he deserved his cap moreso than some others in the team and definitely his outburst had a lot of merit. What happened to the enquiry into the Ashes defeat? It just doesn't make sense.

It's just a complete shambles from top to bottom at CA.

Expect a different looking Tasmanian squad this coming season. For reasons unknown the powers that be have decided to boot ten players :o (two retirees included) out of a squad of 24. I have a couple of gutted team mates up here in Darwin at the mighty Tracy Village cricket club who have missed out on contacts this season for the Tigers. It seems the Tigers recruiters have been busy in the off season.

It doesn't make a lot of sense when you look at how successful we were last year in all forms, but they obviously didn't see a lot in the fringe players they had and decided to look elsewhere. Bad luck boys.

It was noted after their shield win that they had produced very little players for Australia with true success. There's been Hilfy then a street to Doherty, Krezja, Geeves and Paine over the last 5 years or so. No good winning domestic one dayers or shield wins if you're not producing quality national players which Tassie haven't. Seems Tasmanian cicket have realised this and are acting on it for the future. Good initiative and good luck to them.

Did the fat one from SA get the boot - leysy was always raving about him.

Those comments could also apply to Vic cricket.

Think you've over-reacted there Snapper.

With 20/20 cricket coming under a different umbrella this year all states have smaller lists so need to make room.

The guys not offered contracts are - Rana Naveed, Adam Griffith and Gerard Denton, (both retired), Tim McDonald, Jon Wells, Rhett Lockyear, Jeremy Smith, Matt Day, Brady Jones and Hamish Kingston. Hardly household names with Wells & Lockyear the only regulars. & they both had poor years.

Dont worry mate, Tasmanian cricket is the best run, most professional & has the best culture of any cricketing state in the country. This can be seen by the amount of players (5) that have CA contracts (with many others knocking on the door) & the amount of trophies won despite only having 2% of the population. Whilst Coyle, Bailey, Marsh, Divenuto & de Winter remain involved that will always be the case.

True. I'm especially disappointed for young Matty Day. Quality young allrounder who was in the squad for the final of the ryobi series after not getting many chances to impress all year, quality bloke as well.

Any tips on who the new blokes will be Leysy, as Jones is gone we need a second keeper for a start.

Young Tom Triffitt was the keeper in the shield final & will keep the gig ST.

Only 20 years of age & was the Australian glovesman in there under 19 world cup win a couple of years back.

He'll get plenty of chances in the future when Paine steps up to Australia full-time.

Been a pretty hot production line of keepers from Tassie in recent years.

On Day, yeah he didnt get many oppotunities. Their are still a second round of contracts to go so all is not lost yet.

Ponting should have retired. That he didn't, he should have been pushed.

I'd like to know why we didn't follow the tried and true policy of the last 20 years and say that when he was finished as captain, he was finished as a player.

Agree entirely. Warne is spot on in his criticism of the selectors by saying only cutting Katich is the easy out.
His recent form at Test level has been substantially better than the outgoing skipper or Mr Cricket.
The harder decision would have been not offering Punter or Hussey another contract either.
Soft and inconsistent.

Snaps Truly where are ya mate.

See your man Brett Geeves has been forced into retirement at the age of 29 due to ongoing stress fractures in his back.

An extremely quick witted & likeable lad the Tas & Aus quick will forge a good career in the media.

Yeh, he knew for some time that his back wasn't going to get any better. After being out of the game for a couple of years he played the last half of last season for Glenorchy as a batsman as he couldn't bowl. He new before the season was over that he was finished.

I'm not sure if he would've gotten more opportunities for the national team had he not been injured, probably not as he came in when there were a few topline bowlers out with injuries themselves, but did ok.

He was an awesome swing bowler though, his career peaked after his short aussie stint when he was drafted into the IPL, and your right Leysy, you wouldn't meet a better bloke and I would be hard pressed to name a funnier person to get on the gas with. You can guarantee we will be seeing and hearing a lot more of him now.

Yes he would be a great laugh to have a soup or two over Snapper.

Also mate, noticed your mate Matthew Day did end up getting a contract with Tas. Youd be happy with that.

See Tas have also signed Victorian Evan Gulbis. Any of the locals know much about him?

Gulbis has made plenty of runs in District Cricket over the past few years. Don't think he has played any shield games, may have played a few T20 games. He can hit the ball...made about 130 off 50 balls in a district T20 game a few years back. Played for Carlton.
