Cricket

Some surprises there. Berry on SEN just saying that the two spinners selected did not receive Aust contracts yet 4 were given to (other) spinners.

Doherty would get one because he's the No 1 one-day spinner.

Hauritz is injured as well.

Though dont think Shuan Marsh has a CA contract either so make of that what you will.

Also good to see Copeland get a gig (though dont think the pitches will suit him) & Steve Smith left out.

Who the hell is Nathan Lyon??? Is this yet another ploy by CA to pull a rabbit out of the hat?

Not sure on Doug, but Hilfy's injured.

Either way both have a lot of work to do as they need to improve greatly on last summer.

See England rolled India late on Day 5 to take the 1st test in there home series. If they win the 4 test series by 2 tests they will take the No 1 mantle.

Shaped as an excellent series between two very good teams.

Also interesting that Tendulkars' Lords nightmare continued. A horror ground for him. Should have been out 3 times making 12 last night.

Hilfenhaus played last week on the Australia A tour to Zimbabwe . Has he been hurt again ?

In a Malcolm Conn article yesterday it said he was. Not sure what or how serious.

Unlikely to have made if he was fit ATM.

I read that Tendulkar was crook in the 2nd innings.

Regardless, the england bowlers bowled very well on day 5 from what I read. Their bowlers in their home conditions are a real handful. Have a good mix- Anderson swings it, tremlett comes from a great height and hits the deck hard, Broad cuts the ball around off the deck and Swan is probably the best spinner in the world. They also showed in Australia that they can bowl well away from home (wlthough our poor batting contributed to that).

I hate to say it, but they will be deserving of the mantle of best test team in the world, because i reckon they are at the moment.

Yeah they would be deserving & definately a real handful at home. An attacked that can swing the ball at pace like they can in England will be a handful for any batsman.

Between these two & Sth African's there are 3 very good evenly matched teams ATM.

Great to see they've come to their senses about Smith in tests. Got to applaud them for trying things I guess.

How can 25 players be given contracts all of a month ago, to then have so many uncontracted players picked in a 15 man squad?

Because Australian cricket is a shambles at hhe moment, that's why.

It is ridiculous.

Yeah they're trying things but the fact that they've left $3m worth of contracted players out of the squad (as just discussed on SEN) points to a huge level of disorganisation within CA.

Methinx only Watson.
Just.
I get the point but I think you are overstating it a bit. Watson would walk into any test team in the world right now either as an opener or in the middle order.

Before his 200 this week Pieterson's form in the last 2 years has been no better than Michael Clarke or Mike Hussey for instance and Morgan has done nothing much at number 6 . Prior and Haddin's performances would be pretty similar I would think as well , maybe Prior would be marginally ahead but not by much.
None of our bowlers would get a game .

I assume we agree Watson >> Strauss. I reckon Clarke = KP over the past two years.

I agree Morgan is not setting the world on fire, so Clarke gets that spot. And I wouldn't have Haddin in front of Prior. Six test centuries and as quick a scorer as Haddin.

So, we have two breaking in to the England 11.

Most definately. England has bowlers not getting a game like Tim Bresnan who would waltz into our side at the moment, while Monty Panesar would be our first choice spinner. Robert Croft would probably get a game as part of our spin bowling rotations.

Hell even Graham Onions would be better than Mitchell Johnson, at least he can consistently land the ball in the right area and move it in the air and off the seam more than once a season.

I hope Billy the Kid has been doing a lot of work with Mitch, a hell of a lot of work..."Now Mitch, hold the ball like this..."
