On the contract list. Leysy can understand a couple of players coming in. Say on the spinning front where the cupboard is so bare. Though the selection of them has been diabolical for years.

But one example is Steve Smith. Think he was ranked No 7 on the contract list. How the *smile* does that happen...

Rightly he is then dropped from the first test played afterwards. Crazy.

The whole contract system is totally unnecessary. Are players going to defect to New Zealand?

On a positive, great to see Shaun Marsh in the test squad. I'm tipping he'll edge out Khawaja for the no.6 spot. And 'little' Patto. Another national player to have come out of the Panthers. :clap

i guess being an average test, one-day and 20/20 cricketer all adds up.

the contract system does surely need to be looked at. if they do want to keep it, maybe different contract lists for each form of the game?

It seems the contract system was heavily weighed towards the shorter forms, surprise...surprise.

Whatever we put out we will get a caning from the Lankans. Get ready for a pumping.

Hopefully (might as well experiment) the lineup looks like; Shane Watson, Phillip Hughes, Shaun Marsh, Michael Clarke (capt), Usman Khawaja, Ricky Ponting\Mike Hussey, Brad Haddin (wk), Ryan Harris, Trent Copeland, James Pattinson, Nathan Lyon.

Doubt they'd leave out Beer, Johnson and Siddle over Harris, Copeland and Lyon though, they will probably spectate.

Scathing article by Greg Baum on CA and the Big Bash here. He's 100% spot on:

Another good test shaping up between England and India. I see Stuart Broad took a hattrick. He is a greatly improved player... Has become the bowling allrounder we probably thought Johnson would be.

Yep, an entralling Test marred by the extraordinary dismissal of Bell for 137. Perhaps in a bygone era, with less at stake, the Indians would've let it go. From cricinfo:

What drama here! This dismissal will be talked about for long. Praveen Kumar fields clumsily at the boundary, off the last ball of the tea. Kumar doesn't know where the ball is, the umpires are not sure whether it is a four or no. Although tea is not called off, Ian Bell assumes it is tea, and starts to walk off. By that time the throw comes in, and Abhinav Mukund removes the bail just to be sure. The umpires seem to ask India if they want to appeal. India say yes. The umpires have no choice but to rule Bell out. The crowd boos. Bell and the English balcony are stunned, and are not impressed. I am no moral police, I leave the judgements to you all.

Indian players accompanied by loud booing as they take the field after the tea break. Then the boos are replaced by cheers as the crowd realises the Indians have recalled Bell during the break. Good to see cricket retain some semblance of the sportsmanship it's renowned for.

Huge drama wasnt it.

Strauss & Flower knocked on the Indian dressing room at tea asking them reconsider. Which Dhoni obviously did.

Though to be fair it was all Bell's doing & he was extremely lucky to continue what has been a majestic innings.

Gee Tinker Bell is a good batsman to watch when in form. Not many prettier players to watch in world cricket than him.

From the deer in the headlights when Warne had it all over him in 2005 to now has been a big improvement. A very good player.

England have taken it away from India now. India will be battling to save the test from here. Looks like the Poms may climb to the top of the tree and claim the number 1 ranking.

Should have been out IMO. Almost looks like he is running when the ball is returned. The umpires had not called play. Not sure if the Indian fieldsman was foxing or he thought it was 4. Indians didn't have to recall him, very impressed by their sportsmanship.

Agree with Phil about Bell. Lovely to watch. But I'm going to disagree about Indian sportsmanship in general. In this case they were convinced to do the right thing - although Bell only had himself to blame if they didn't - but ask any international umpire (Daryl Harper in particular) who tries to intimidate them the most.

I wasn't commenting on their sportsmanship in general merely in this instance. Apparently they discussed recalling him before being approached by Strauss/Flower.

Personally the Indians give me the sh#ts with their behaviour but not quite sure they deserve condemnation in this instance.

Who are the panthers?

Dandenong CC, Premier Cricket premiers. Ian Harvey, Cam White, Siddle, the Patto Bros and Josh 'Killer' Marquet, who didn't play for Australia but served Tassie well, as lavy will vouch. Dessie Haynes spent a year with them back when they were a sub-district club and before he got a gig with the Windies (did better as a bowler than a batsman!). AFL umpire Robbie Findlay used to bowl right-arm doorknobs.

The club merged with the dying district club Waverley to become Waverley-Dandenong, which evolved into Dandenong-Waverley, and now just Dandenong. They play at Shepley Oval, home of the Stingrays (and once upon a time the VFA Redlegs). Dandenong was home to the criminally ignored (by state selectors) Warren Ayres for a decade or so and for even longer for the legendary Brendan 'Bushy' McArdle. If you ever get the chance to have a drink with that man (try the London after play on Boxing Day), grab it (and try to keep up). The man knows everyone worth knowing in the cricket world (and I do mean world) and is a fantastic bloke to boot. Was still playing Premier Cricket at 47. Legend.

No way known was he attempting to score a run. Technically it was out, the same as Trevor Chappell's underarm was technically legal...

More similar was how Dean Jones was run out in the West Indies in 1991.

May be more similar, but still not a good example as it was a no ball; that was rubbish umpiring as it isn't a run-out off a no ball unless the player is attempting a run, in that case he clearly wasn't.
