Does look a better batting lineup. Not that it happened today with him being in early but Punter deserves to drop down to an easier slot like his contemporaries Tendulkar, Lara & Co did much earlier in there careers.

It would still look a hell of a lot better without Hughes in it. Has there been a worse technique open the batting in international cricket?

Khawaja has his faults & has a hell of a lot to learn (especially with his footwork) but is a better bet than Hughes up there.

Kudos to Leysy who has been on Hughes case from the beginning. Not sure why he got back in when he couldn't get a run at domstic level.

Hear hear. Punter has batted at 3 in 112 Tests for an average of 56.59 at that spot

BTW do you know how many times Lara batted at 3 in Tests - 43 times and averaged over 60 (he averaged 34 against India)

And the little master - NEVER. Not once has he batted at 3 in a Test. He opened once but otherwise has batted 4 and below.

Not for the faint hearted that spot.

Another interesting stat, in the 4th innings of a test Punter has batted 39 times and averaged 54. (1st innings he averages 62)

Lara batted in 46 4th innings and averaged 35 (averages 70 in 1st innings) whilst Tendulkar averages 38 from 52 innings in the 4th Innings (he averages 69 in the first innings)

Who would you like to see coming in on the last day at No. 3 when the chips are down? The Tassie guy all the way for me.

BTW Hughes is not a bottle opener let alone a natio0nal one.

Bring back Katich. We need some spine up at the top of the order.

We do. Three cheap outs yesterday chasing wide balls. Hussey and Marsh showing what test batting is all about

Unless he posts a significant total in the second dig he should be dropped for the first home test, but he'll be back eventually. Time will prove the Third Man and all the other naysayers wrong about Hughes.

Went to a Graham Thorpe sportsman night for the AFC Dons Trust last night. Told some great yarns. Interestingly said Saun Pollock was the bowler who troubled him most (not Warne or McGrath) and Lara the best batsman. Placed him slightly ahead of Tendulka who he claims could be slowed/pinned down bowling at his left shoulder. He said when Lara was flowing there was nothing you could do to slow him.

:-X

Hughes has poor footwork but too much raw talent to give up on. It's not like domestic openers are knocking the door down.

Bloody hell. ;D Been waiting a loooonnngg while to get into leysy on Hughes you blokes. :spin

Lets hope it doesnt take as long til your able to get into him again.

Sorry, keeps sending me to sleep that test match

Yeah, the funny thing is the ICC ripped into the curator of the first test.

Pitches like that actually promote more interesting cricket than what they've played on here, that will likely get a tick by the powers that be.

Yeah heaven forbid they play test cricket on a pitch that actually tests them. Although that first test pitch was a dustbowl from day one. Still, it produced a good game and a thorough examination of batting techniques.

How the hell did Marsh not go to the video tape on his dismissal? Got nowhere near it.
