And someone needs to give Johnson the coup de grace.

Staggers me he keeps his place. For 9 out of every 10 tests we play one short with Mitch in the side.

He can't bat or bowl.

JB - Good article here on the pitch & the 3rd test in general by Peter Roebuck thats worth a read.

This wicket has a reputation of being a road though. I saw that Sangakarra and Mahela average well over 70 at the ground, and most test matches there are a run fest.

Still, if teams bat poorly as we did in the first innings, results can happen, though not often.

Sri Lanka's batting yesterday was baffling....Matthews put his own personal glory ahead of the team's and pretty much killed any chance of a result.

Yeah it has been awful cricket to watch. Just so boring, terrible. They should reduce test cricket to 3 days and make green tops or massive turners compulsory. Would make test cricket far more interesting.

Though I suspect you wanted me to read it due to the very last paragraph.

For those with Foxtel: how did Siddle bowl? I know he took 4 fa but was it a good 4 fa or???

Hughes out early on day 5. 4 down with a lead of 69, and a very long tail given Haddin and Johnson are struggling to score any runs.

What has been a boring test could light up later on today....

Series win to Australia 1-0. Not a bad effort for side trying to rebuild (albeit in a rather disjointed fashion). Hughes 23, Marsh 28, Siddle 27, Copeland 25, Lyon 24.

Huss, Haddin, Clarke, Watson, Ponting, Johnson all 30+.

Who, Leysy.

Good effort to beat Sri Lanka in their country. They havent lost a series at home in 6 years would you believe.

See Neilsen has stood down. Good thing. Had a whinge on the way out as well about having to re-apply for the job. Unbelievable.

Off to South Africa now, which will be an even bigger test. A win there would be huge, if unlikely.

Very good effort to win over there. Will be a massive step up in South Africa.

Thank goodness for Mr Cricket's renaissance, we would have been in dire straits without him. Hopefully Ponting can take a leaf out of his book because he had a very poor series. Watson too will need to lift over in South Africa.

Also need to ensure Ryan Harris is fully fit because he is our best pace bowler IMO.

Bloody hell. ;D Been waiting a loooonnngg while to get into leysy on Hughes you blokes. :spin

Lets hope it doesnt take as long til your able to get into him again.

One innings on a road against a poor attack does nothing to change my opnion that he'll never be a reliable opener. How can a guy who is no good against genuine fast bowling be a test opener?

Yep forgot about him.

He, Johnson and Hughes will have the pressure on them in SA.

I'd have Ponting ahead of Hughes in terms of needing to do something. Has been a very long time since the ex-skip has played a convincing knock.

And, while I reckon Hughes looks loose, 3 tons in 13 tests is pretty useful - and he is still young.

Problem with Hughes is he's been very North esque either getting a big score or nothing at all. Not good for an opener who's role is trying to shield the middle order. This being his first score over 36 in his 13 innings upon his return to the team.

South Africa will be a good test for him.

Here are the stats for the tour

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/records/averages/batting_bowling_by_team.html?id=6600;team=2;type=series

The two that stand out are Haddin & Johnson.

Hussey & Harris had big tours.

Thanks for this.

I'd add Marsh to your list. In fact if Hughes had told him to get a referral in the 2nd dig, his numbers would have looked a lot better. (I can understand Marsh would be rattled in his second test, but what was Hughes doing?)

Also, Watson's bowling was more than acceptable. Needs to re-learn how to build an innings.

He sure does...flashes at too many wide ones early for an opener. However, its fair to say he isn't on his own there.

I think he wants to bully the opening bowlers - a la Hayden at his peak. As good as Watson is, he is a level behind Hayden.
