Cricket

Tasmania get over the line thanks to some brilliant Xavier Doherty bowling.

He really is developing into as international class one-day bowler.

Tas will attempt to do the double over the Vics in the shield match starting Friday.

Back to the on-field stuff.

Leysy has a question. Just watching Kumar Sangakarra chalk up yet another test ton against Pakistan. The guy is rarely talked about when people bring up all-time great batsman of the modern era. i.e. Lara, Tendulkar, Ponting & Kallis.

Why?

Leysy reckons he should be ranked right alongside them.

Agree Leysy, he's an amazing player.

Does he get the gloves in front of Gilchrist in the greatest ever 11?

No, he'd have a top five batting spot for himself I reckon. He has an incredible record. 8 double tons, 26 tons at an average of over 55. He's a lock in.

Interested to see who people think should be our three pace bowlers in the first test.

Harris is a given, Johnson's good recent form and history on SA'n decks should see him across the line. Siddle, Copeland and Cummins batting it out for the last spot.

Copeland would get the nod from me, his warm up game didn't prove too fruitfull wicket-wise but his line and length will prove valuable for Harris, Johnson and Lyon. Siddle's warm up was good, Cummins was ok and will see a lot of games in the future and would be unlucky after a good one-day series to miss out, but for me Copeland would be a more attack balancing selection.

Last test Siddle was our best performed bowler. He also bowled well in most recent tour match. And he was very good in the tests on the last tour of South Africa.

Cummins too recently has seriously put his hand up. As much as I rate Siddles heart and endeavour, better to give one of the other two an extended run, especially on friendly pitches. Siddle does good things but not consistently enough for me.

For whatever reason, the Lankans don't get much publicity. Mahela is another who has a fantastic record yet gets forgotten about when the best players are talked about. Perhaps it is the fact that Sanga's record against the Aussies isn't great (solid, but nothing more) that sees him overlooked by Australians?

Sangakarras record stacks up against any player from the modern era, no doubt about it.

I'd leave Johnson out and go with Harris, Siddle and Cummings.
Johnson's record in recent times does not warrant his selection but his record in South Africa does and for some reason he seems to be able to get his in swinger to the right hander working over there . It was going again in the one dayers .

Siddle's place in the side long term looks very shaky with all these young quicks coming through but I suspect he will be picked for this game . He is another with a good record over there and had a good tour game so its Harris , Johnson and Siddle for me .

Johnson won't be dropped. South Africa's his WACA home away from home. If all tests were only ever played in Perth & over there, he'd be the best bowler in the world instead of one of the worst.

I agree he's a bit erratic and inconsistent, but one of the worlds worst! There's a lot worse bowlers out there Turnip.

just wanna know what peoples thoughts are in regards to this 20/20 big bash league. personally i reckon it's gonna be a crap. ridiculously manufactured tripe create by a desperate cricket australia trying to revive a dying sport.

Will probably have a look from a punting perspective but the competition will have next to no meaning for leysy.

The irony is it's dying because of this *smile* that's being played. Reduce the amount being played and get some meaning back into cricket.

Alas, the almighty dollar has put paid to that for good.

I'm not happy about it at all. I want to support Victoria!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
