I think I heard KB say today that Bill Lawry said as an opener you shouldn't even play a shot in the first session.

That may be taking leysy's point too far. :hihi But Bills attitude does still stand.

Marsh can bat time. So can Clarke and Hussey. Watson yet to prove he can. Punter in real trouble. Needs runs or it could be all over. Suspect he'll get the NZ series no matter what though.

What an absolute Disgrace.Seymour U/12,s would have applied themselves better.
I,m not a huge fan of Katich however if he,s not a better option than his replacement then im a monkey,s you know what.Fair dinkum Hughes should really do himself a favor let alone the Australian public and take up baseball where his technique would be more suited too.
Brad Haddin,Yet another irresponsable shot,Time to give it up or be pushed and bring in Paine or Wade.At least both value there wicket.
Mitchell Johnson,Have said it before and i,ll say it again. He,s the most overhyped, overated cricketer ever to pull on the whites at any level. The sooner he,s out of the side the better our attack will be.

Hussey definately.

Marsh shows some signs for some period of time but his biggest issue at first class level has been digging in for long periods as shown by only 7 first class centuries from 117 innings. The responsibility of batting up the order in test cricket may bring the best out of him though.

Clarke, sorry not with you for the most part. Can be very flashy especially outside off when conditions are against him. His biggest knock has been not getting runs when his team needs them. This innings here obviously a massive exception.

Yep, whats been lost in the batting disaster is Johnson's *smile* bowling. He is a liability. Can't keep playing him in the hope he gets it right for his one test in 10.

Marsh has definitely risen to the occasion (as I knew he would ;D). We'll have to disagree on Clarke. While I agree he has flashed himself out at times (so did S.Waugh) he's also dug in plenty. He wouldn't have the record he does if he couldn't. Another bloke who sells his wicket dearly is Siddle. How Harris remains above him in the order is a mystery.

Don't generally rate Roebuck, but he nailed it when he wrote this yesterday even before the last night's carnage:

Modern Australian batsmen are encouraged, almost obliged, to hit through the first line of the ball which leaves them poorly placed to counter late swing or seam, a weakness skilfully exploited last season by the touring Englishmen.

Time for Mrs Cricket,Ponting,Haddin & jhnson to pack their bags 7 head out of the test arena.lf Johnson sorts his sh#t out he still could be a decent player.

Big if mb. Looks disinterested when he bowls and bowls so much rubbish.

If he can't take a few tonight then he should go, never to return.

Punter will at least get his farewell summer in Oz. Though if he can't make runs against the Kiwis he should pack it in before the Indian series.

As a batsman?

Screw that. He had his chance to say goodbye and chose not to go when he should have.
Form has been on the decline for two years & no more time should be wasted on blooding a replacement.

Agree on Haddin. Hussey's been in good form but he too should be tapped on the shoulder.

Never said that's what should happen but you can guarantee that's what will happen whether we like it or not.

Still injured. Wade will probably come in if Haddin's dropped now.

Haddin should be dropped on principle at least. To disrespect the baggy green the way he did, he should never be allowed to wear it again. Send Wade over there ASAP

They're all just a bunch of rock stars who are no where near as good as they think they are. Look at the careers of Johnson, Watson, Haddin etc .... how would you feel if you broke in to that legendary side that contained Gilchrist, Warne, McGrath, etc. It's no surprise they think their sh!t doesn't stink.

You could just about get rid of the lot of them and consider them that lost generation of Australian cricket. Why isn't Khawaja in the side?

We don't have a big squad over there but assuming Marsh is fit he should open with Watson and let Khuwaja bat at 3 in the next test . At least he can play straight .

Cummins in for Johnson .

If we could fly a few more in all the better , especially a keeper as I am over Haddin .

The biggest reason for leysy is not technique but that batsmen have lost the art of batting time. With the plethora of 20/20 & one-day cricket most players just dont have the patience to work for long periods for minimal runs when the going is tough. A few tight overs or even balls at test level to our players & the big shot comes out.

This "batting time" leysy speaks of is possibly the most underrated skill a batsman can have. & Australia currently dont have it.

Excellent point, Leysy.

We were discussing that last weekend with the Premier Cricket switch from 1-dayers to 2-day matches. The key was for all Richmond players to build innings and partnerships; to bat for sessions, not for runs.
The runs come with time, at different speeds.

To count the balls of each over, to count the overs, count the sessions, that's how you build long innings.

The consequence was the Tiger 1sts and 2nds making over 300 runs each, the Tiger 3s making close to 300.
None of the four sides were all out.
The Tiger 4s bowled their opposition out for 93 and replied with about 6-170.

You're right about the batting time in general.
However, in yesterday's conditions, when many players didn't get a start, it were the techniques and shot selection that were questionable.
