I wouldn't object to Butterworth getting a go either.

Either way, Clarke needs a team that's his own, not riddled with remnants of bygone eras. It wasn't until Border had his own team that he really started winning and that's where Australian cricket is at now. Hopefully it won't take us 4 years this time around to realise.
 
Just referring again to the 1969-70 SA d Aust 4-nil white-wash.

Those who can, will remember that it came straight after an amazing effort by Lawry's team where the Aussies beat India in India 3-1 in 5 tests.
This was the series that established Ian Chappell as a reliable no.3 for Australia.

Those in the know, will remember that the SA series came straight after the Indian series - December into January, with completely different wickets.
And the players got ripped off with their payments too.

This, of course, was another stuff up by the Australian Cricket Board.
And guess who was in charge of the ACB at that time?
You guessed it, Don Bradman.

And Bill Lawry was the one who paid for all.

Hasn't got the cattle.

The fact that a guy in his first test is the only threatening bowler says a lot.

Aah, the tall poppy syndrome is alive and well in Australia it seems.

There is another thread on PRE somewhere where we discuss who the greatest sportsman of all time is. Incredibly, Bradman barely gets a look in. Have a look at his wikipedia page, particularly the section where his stats are compared to other great sportsman and it is shown what they would have to have done to have been as exceptional (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bradman#World_sport_context). Look at the graph on the right where his batting average is compared to the next 11 best. More than any other sportsman in history, he was statistically at least, a freak of nature.

Bradman made 6996 runs in 52 Tests. Sachin Tendulkar has made 15086 runs in 183 Tests. If Bradman had played that many Tests, he'd have made 24,621 runs - unheard of figures.

But Bradman wasn't a good Aussie was he? Wasn't blokey, didn't smoke, barely drank. Not alot of charisma there I know. As an administrator, he may have made some mistakes, but he spent 51 years on the SACA committee at a time when all that stuff was honorary, and all he did was implement the then archaic policies that any cricket administrator around the world would have made.

I could go on. He is probably the most famous Australian that ever lived.

But let's not miss a chance to sink the boots in.

Neither are great sides but it's been a cracking Test match.

We have something too look forward to with this kid. Great effort in his 4th first class game.

I think the target is beyond us though, but will be an interesting 4th innings with a few careers on the line.
 
The biggest issue I have with Clarke as captain is that I think he reads too much of the press and lets it affect him.

He needs to get a tougher skin, like Border had to. I am not suggesting for one minute they were not great captains, but Taylor, Waugh and to less of an extent Ponting had it easier with the sides they had. Warne and McGrath just kept getting wickets, and that would make any captain look better.

Clarke hasn't done very well this second SA innings. I think Lawson hit it on the head when he said he was captaining like a man under pressure.

Clarke just needs to free himself from those schackles and call it like he sees it. Not easy to do, but over time it will determine how well he does as skipper.

Yes, but a worry as well.

Looked like the only likely quick we had on the park this whole match, and his variation and ball selection showed he not only has the ability, but the brain to go a long way.

But 18 is too young to have to carry an attack. I really hope our selectors ensure he doesn't get over burdened to early while his body is not yet up to it.

He realy needs a couple more years of first grade cricket to get himself physically ready for a 10 year + test career as our premium strike bowler.
 
Should be a great night's cricket tonight. 168 to get with 7 wickets in hand.

This is what test cricket is all about. Anything could happen, although I still believe that once the Clarke/Ponting partnership is broken, we could fold like a deck of cards.
