Should be a great night's cricket tonight. 168 to get with 7 wickets in hand.

This is what test cricket is all about. Anything could happen, although I still believe that once the Clarke/Ponting partnership is broken, we could fold like a deck of cards.
Agreed

The big shame is its only a 2 test series.

Didnt see Aus bowl last night but must have been a huge effort from Cummins. Carried the attack in his first game as an 18 y.o by the looks. :o Huge talent.

Cracking days play coming up tonight. Hopefully the great man can get a big hundred & lead his country home to the biggest run chase ever at the Wanderers.

Considering the pressure of a failure being his last ever innings, the attack, & the conditions & the state of the match it will be a famous knock to rival Steve Waugh's SCG hundred if he can produce a masterpiece.

Cmon Punter.

I only watched to Lunch . Very surprised to see that Cummins got 6 because when he bowled before lunch he looked very laboured and was bowling at around 130 kmh only and Johnson was not bowling well ( again). Siddle looked the best bowler but they were keeping out the straight ones and missing the good ones . That partnership between Steyn and Philander may well turn out to be the difference.
I have no idea why Clarke got so defensive , he even bowled Hussey at 7 down when the new ball was due.

Cummins came out firing after lunch. His first two balls were rip-snorters to take out Philander and clean up Morkel. The kid is a deadset star.

I didn't see any of the Aussies' innings but from highlights this morning it looked like Punter was playing straighter - one classic straight drive from Steyn. Let's hope he's got another 80+ in him tonight. A 170-run partnership with his successor would do me but I get the feeling we'll either be cleaned up or it will be a nail biter. I have another feeling Steyn's impact ain't complete yet.

I said it after day one and I'll say it again, much praise to the groundsman who has turned out an ideal Test match wicket. Something in it for everyone, hard work required to succeed and a close match very much alive going into the last day. Perfect.

Leysy agrees with all that Spooked.

You are right about Punter. He was playing very very straight. Every opportunity to give the full face of the bat he was.

He's a determined little bastard who would love nothing more than prove his detractors wrong. He won't sell his wicket cheaply tonight.

And how ridiculous that if we win there won't be a decider. Cos test cricket's not as 'entertaining' as hit-and-giggle. My arse.

Here's hoping for another Punter classic like his 156 at Manchester in 2005, or the 'only-way-you'll-get-me-out-is-if-Hussey-runs-me-out-oh-*smile*-Hussey's-run-me-out 60-odd in the last 2009 test. No bowler alive or dead would have got him out on those days.

Agree re Ponting, he played a lot straighter yesterday. Will go down as one if the great innings if he can guide us to victory tonight.

On another note I thought Khawaja batted beautifully yesterday, some of his pull shots off the quicks were sublime. He style reminds me of Sangakarra a bit so hopefully he can turn out half as good as him.

Khawaja is quality. He needs to concentrate on playing straight too. In the first innings it was just a matter of time until Steyn trapped him LBW.

Agree with you but the crowds have looked very poor at the two tests.

Whether its superior marketing or the demise of test cricket, but aside from Aus and England, grounds look empty in most countries during test matches.

Aah, the tall poppy syndrome is alive and well in Australia it seems.

There is another thread on PRE somewhere where we discuss who the greatest sportsman of all time is. Incredibly, Bradman barely gets a look in. Have a look at his wikipedia page, particularly the section where his stats are compared to other great sportsman and it is shown what they would have to have done to have been as exceptional (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bradman#World_sport_context). Look at the graph on the right where his batting average is compared to the next 11 best. More than any other sportsman in  history, he was statistically at least, a freak of nature.

Bradman made 6996 runs in 52 Tests. Sachin Tendulkar has made 15086 runs in 183 Tests. If Bradman had played that many Tests, he'd have made 24,621 runs - unheard of figures.

But Bradman wasn't a good Aussie was he? Wasn't blokey, didn't smoke, barely drank. Not alot of charisma there I know. As an administrator, he may have made some mistakes, but he spent 51 years on the SACA committee at a time when all that stuff was honorary, and all he did was implement the then archaic policies that any cricket administrator around the world would have made.

I could go on. He is probably the most famous Australian that ever lived.

But let's not miss a chance to sink the boots in.

My goodness!

That was a return that was a bit over the top. All I did was to point out that Don Bradman was an ACB chief when Lawry was sacked as Australian captain in 1969/70.

And that the focus of my discussion was a comparison of the Aust v SA teams of 1969/70 versus that of now.

The only advice I can offer you is that only fools and fanatics see no flaws in their heroes.
Bradman was undoubtedly cricket's greatest batsman.
Like all men, he had his flaws too.

Should be a great night's cricket, tonight.

Don't understand the logic of playing 2 against NZ and 4 against India this summer either. Why not 3 & 3?

Neither do I. Logic doesn't match Cricket Australia.

Good performance from Khawaja and Punter, so it's all up to him tonight. Important first session.

Be a great way to retire!

Heh heh....stick it in! ;D

i cracked up hard this morning when i read about cricket australia relaxing the rules so the bay 13 yobbo's can return and have their fun during the big bash. i guess cricket australia is fully aware they're running a dying sport and are trying to win back fans. good luck with that :rofl

If they start at 1:00, they would get about 50-55 overs if they stopped at 5:00 like they have being on the first few days. Does that sound about right?

If thats the case, it will be so close!
