A first test series win in Australia, 1985
After New Zealand's victory in Brisbane in the first match of the 1985 series, the Australians bounced back to win the second test at Sydney, setting up the decider at Perth in late November and early December. Eleven wickets for Richard Hadlee and fine half-centuries by Bruce Edgar and Martin Crowe saw the New Zealanders clinch the series 2–1.

But wasn't that when Australian cricket was at rock bottom? Oh...

I remember that Test well. The late David Hookes, whose Test career never really took off, was the perfect man for the occasion as we needed a quick 50-odd when he came in and he duly obliged.

What a motley crew that team was, openíng the bowling was O'Donnell and Gilbert, with three specialist spinners in Matthews, Bright and Holland to come. Them were the days when Sydney started turning about lunch time on day 1!

Holland's match figures ... 88-35-174-10.

I was at that Sydney Test for the fifth day, was 14 - ran on the ground after we hit the winning runs, action-packed day both on and off field.

I remember that series for what Richard Hadlee did. In the first test he took 9 wickets in one innings, while he took a catch to remove the 10th.

He just landed the ball in the corridor every single time, and our batsmen, who were pretty ordinary it must be said, could not handle the questions he was asking of them.

Simple game fast bowling can be. Put the ball in the right areas and the wickets will come. I will be interested in how our young blokes go at this. At least we won't have Mitch Johnston showing how it's not done.

So who do you think will be 12th man?

I think they will play Lyon. As we have not got Watson as our fifth bowler. So Lyon might need to bowl some long spells.

Cutting has been the best performed this year and it's his home turf so I would give him thw chance. I also the they will go the NSW left armer. So that leaves Pattinson holding the drinks.

It'll be interesting to see how Ponting goes through these next 6 tests considering the media pressure asking for him to retire.

Starc I think . I heard Rodney Hogg talking about it and he said that his mail in that there are some concerns in the Aussie Camp about Starc's ability to bowl 40-50 overs in a Test Match . It is tempting to have the variety of a left armer though .

Starc might be the victom of Watson not playing then. Clarke and Hussey might be required to bowl a few overs. Anyway I'm looking forward to this test with all our new blood and the fact that I'm flying in tomorrow night to go to the cricket for a blokes weekend.

The other thing notable about that 9 for was the way the Australian batsmen simply let Hadlee do as he pleased.

Hadlee was in a rhythm and the batsmen did nothing to try and throw him off. And I don't mean by hitting him out of the park.

Basically for every ball Hadlee went to his run up marker and immediately started his run in. He didn't even take time to see if the batsman was really ready. The batsmen just let him keep doing it. No one tried to brush away a fly as he neared the crease to deliver or anything.

Not sure it would have made that much of a difference in that test, but the Australians hatched a plan after that innings to try to break up his bowling, and it certainly seemed to blunt his effectiveness from then on.

Was that the series when the Australian team had a running verbal battle with Mark Greatbatch the whole summer ?

Kiwis off to a flyer. 0/44 of 10 overs.

Poor James Pattinson got hit for 13 runs in his first over of test cricket. He and Starc having a baptism of fire.

3/80 now, lets see if the Kiwis show some backbone. Ryder and Taylor in now, crucial partnership

Vettori's batting ODI style so far.

Still can't believe Poodle dropped that easy catch.

he is ugly but effective Vettori. Not sure why their best batsman bats at number 7!
