Paine being out would just be an excuse, Wade is ready. Put him in and we have a 10 year player.
Correct. Reminds of the Ian Healy/Peter Anderson situation of some 23 years ago. Anderson was fairly well regarded as the best keeper in the country and ready to replace Zoehrer or Dyer or whoever it was. Anderson broke a finger and the selector went for the untried Ian Healy who kept for the next 11 seasons.

change of subject...

which team will you support in the big bash and why?

personally i've made it quite clear on this thread and i am not a fan of 20/20 cricket. i also think that this new mickey mouse comp is a desperate attempt by cricket australia to save a dying game in this country. yes it will be a novelty at first and get some large crowds. but imho it will die in the arse very quickly.

but in saying that, i have to chose a team... and i choose the renegades. it's difficult to find many reasons to justify supporting a new and plastic franchise, but i have to chose someone. and my main reasons are that i think they have a better squad than the stars, but being based at the MCG (plus the shame warne factor), i think the stars will get the majority of the support in melbourne. so i guess i'm leaning towards to underdog.

Article from Craddock on how test cricket seems to be in terminal decline:

CA is ignoring one of the chief recommendation of the Argus report, that test cricket be a priority.

They're also ignoring the obvious solution for where to put the BB and thats to completely get rid of one day cricket.

Tim Paine has been ruled out for 4 more months with his finger. Haven't known of too many finger injuries as bad as that. By the time he starts playing first class cricket again (which I guess there could be some doubt if he will) he will have been out of the game for well over 12 months. Timing could not be worse for him or Australia.

Horrible news. Was set to be a future Australian captain at that time of his career. Oozes leadership, great batting technique & temperment, & most importantly as good a glovemen as there is in the country. Will take some doing just to get back now he needs yet further surgery. Tough break for one of the good guys.

The only positive is 20 y.o starlet Tom Triffit will get more exposure. But you'd think he'd play as a batsman in any case.

On Paine though, the injury should never has occured in the first place. Facing Dirk Nannes, on a green top, whilst miked up in a ridiculous & needless match that was only put on by the marketing boffins at CA may have cost a talented young man his career.

Terrible luck for Paine. A keeper with broken hands is like a chiropractor with a bad back.

On another note I reckon Hughes's goose is cooked no matter how much he works on it. Long way back for the young man, maybe never.

The only way we can beat the Indians is if we have pitches like the ones in Brisbane and Hobart with movement and bounce. They really struggled in England on those types of pitches.

And if we bowl to those conditions. I felt we bowled too short for extended periods at Hobart.

What was that game leysy, some sort of 20/20 exhibition?

I agree. Particularly Starc was Mitch Johnson like. I would expect Ryan Harris, if fit, to come in for Starc and he is usually pretty consistent bowling good lines and lengths.

It was however good to see Siddle swing the ball in Hobart by pitching it up a bit further than he normally does. It is amazing how much difference half a yard in length makes in swinging the ball. I personally can't believe it took McDermott to come in and point that out to the bowlers...what the hell was Troy Cooley doing???

A few responses to points raised:
- Starc has massive potential. Great height (both the top of his head and more importantly the release of the ball) and he regularly swings it back in to right-handers. He's not the finished article yet but looks capable of taking plenty of wickets for Australia.
- Hughes. No doubt technically flawed. No doubt hugely talented. Will be back I reckon.
- Big Bash team: the G v Etihad. Warnie v Afridi. D.Huss v Hodge. I can walk to the G and walk into the members: case closed.
- Paine's finger: horrible news for him and Australian cricket, great news for Brad Haddin, while Matt Wade gets the finger from selectors.
- Pitches v India: better have some juice in them.
- Can we beat England? If we get our batting right and our bowlers fit, blood oath. Big if on the first though.

Warner
Maddinson
Marsh
Watson
Clarke
Khawaja
Paine
Starc
Pattinson
Cummins
Lyon

is an XI I'd like to see sooner than later. Add Wade, Siddle, (hopefully) Hughes, Faulkner, Hazlewood and ideally a legspinner and you have a touring team for 2013.

Back to future . T20 ought to be a strictly domestic affair , last 2 weeks December & 1st 2 weeks of January (during or just before/after the Melbourne & Sydney Tests) for cricketers retired from the 2 longer forms of the sport.

Shield cricket ought to be restored to prominence to allow Test/international players to play with possibles/probables as in days gone by , rather than the glorified 2nd 11 comp it’s become.

1 week minimum break between Tests (bar Boxing Day/NY fixtures) to allow players to return to state / grade cricket.

Ryan Harris.......He can’t barely get through a net let alone a 4-5 day game , pass...Shane Watson is an allrounder & shouldn’t be thought of until he can prove his fitness to both bat & bowl , not one or the other . Dan Christian may be worth a go . Cowan for Hughes . Wade for Haddin (both Hobart dismissals atrocious & stamped his papers). Agree , one , if not both, Ponting & Hussey to be cut . Shame as their records merited both to go out on their terms but they’ve both clung on too long . Basically , if we want to usher in a new breed , Clarke now needs to be the senior in both age & experience to stamp authority on the group. Don’t agree he should be a selector though, & neither should the coach..

agree. we're still playing, batting at least, like we still think we're the best ever. Um we ain't. As you say Haddin is the worst offender. He is unbeleivable. Dumb, pigheaded or inept, take your pick. It really sh!ts me when the commentators say 'well he won't compromise his natural game'. Well he bloody should change his game depending on the situation, thats good cricket. Is his natural game slogging and getting caught? Well maybe he should adjust that a bit. He's been doing this for a couple of years now, the more we need him to just stay there, the more likely he will go the tonk and get out cheap. I've had it up to here with haddin. Sack him.

Agree on Huss and ponting. Huss sacked now, ponting at season's end, if not now. Don't agree on Watson. Still young and has shown he's worth his spot even if he doesn't bowl much or not at all.

I've said it before, Haddin won't be sacked until Paine's fit because the selectors are afraid Wade will steal Paine's birthright. On form Wade should already be in. Let's hope Paine's finger comes good sometime this decade.

When is the Boxing day side named? I get the horrible feeling Huss, Ponting and Haddin aren't getting dropped.

Can't follow the big bash or whatever this new 20/20 thing is called.

One has Hodge but wears bandwagon red and plays from Etihad, the other is run by McChins.

Can't follow either team.

I will watch as a neutral.

Ex-Tiger Greg Stafford posted figures of 8/4 for Glen Iris v Mulgrave on Saturday. I'd previously heard he was a handy bat in synthetic competition, but in Dunstan Shield (ECA's top turf grade) against a traditionally strong club in Mulgrave, that is pretty damn impressive.

Your probably right, could have have another batch of selectors who aren't prepared to make tough decisions.

Wowsers!

According to mycricket.com he had only taken 3 wickets previously this season. Last weekend Mulgrave were 0/32, Stafford came on 1st change. all out for 44 :o

One of the boys who's faced him said he's only about my pace, which I assure you is strictly pedestrian. :old
