if you have a spare 10 minutes I urge you to read Rahul Dravid's speech delivered at the Don Bradman Oration.

I have one one word to describe my reading - WOW.
And I wonder how many current Australian players could both write and deliver a speech of this magnitude.

Thanks for the link. I listened to the first 7-8 mins on ABC radio on Saturday and was blown away by the quality of the oration.

It's probably not altogether fair to say that the current Aussies would not be up to this quality though. Give them time. I believe Gilly, Hayden, S Waugh and Langer are all gifted speakers with a great love of the game. Having said this, Dravid was very, very classy.

But aren't they essentially city v city? Most of the Renegades and Stars are Victorians, most of the Strikers are South Australian and most of the Sixers are Nswelshmen. Not sticking up for this concept at all but it seems to me most players didnt stray far from their home state.
I can sort of understand where CA is coming from. They were losing multi talented kids to the AFL,NRL etc. They had to do something to make the sport more enticing in money and oppotunity terms. With the previous concept you'd still attract those from overseas,But by having 2 sides out of both Vic and Nsw its actually devaluating[sp] the concept as shown in the crowd on Saturday.People want to see the best players of each state up against each other.
IMO they had the perfect formula prior to this years and the lack of Bums on seats on Sat night proved it.

They could've added ACT & NT if they wanted an 8 team comp. I guess they weren't viable -particularly NT with it's weather this time of year . Couple of Kiwi sides might've been better, but on top of travel costs they probably wouldn't want to risk them doing well and taking spots in the Champions League or worse - competing in the final.

Meh - the whole thing is bollocks anyway. The only real highlight for me so far was the WACA playing the Filth's theme song when Paul Collingwood came on to bowl last night and hearing the Perth crowd booing - and he was playing for Perth. Hope they play it in Melbourne. :hihi

Can't they just put a bit of subtlety in this 20/20 game? It's just a formal version of kids cricket. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaawn!!

Good article from Rohan Connoly of all people today:

Cricket Sells Its Soul:

The more of this stuff I read the more I'm convinced cricket won't improve until Sutherland has gone. They seem to have no idea about how to improve the game.

My greater concern with cricket, as expressed sometime ago, is that it will go the same way as tennis for much the same reasons.

1. Too much money supporting the top end and not going back into grassroots development.
2. The decreasing supply of ovals available for the sport.
3. Lack of development programs in schools.
4. The decline of new talent.

Tennis since 1960 has seen all of this happen. The first inklings have appeared for cricket over the last decade.

The Big Bash now raises the concern that if it runs at an overall financial loss, then money that might have been set aside for future grassroots development will now evaporate.

BTW, The Richmond Tigers have just won the 2012 Premier Cricket T20 Club Championship and are currently 3rd on the Premier Cricket overall ladder.

From 15th to 3rd in one season,
Go Tiges!

Sutherland has escaped all reviews but he's captain of the titanic

India got Warner for 2, Khawaja 20 and Hughes for 25 today. Ed Cowan 89no at the moment from 120 odd balls.. Still won't get a call up he's the wrong type of opener for the test team..He's an in form opener so that rules him out straight away.

Well now i have Austar i get to watch Big Bash and see what its all about. Laughed at the interview with Dan Christian.

BJ: Big match for you tonight Dan
Christian: "yeah, theres a big crowd (he looks at the near empty stands) hopefully in tonight"

Record Gabba crowd.

Good win by the Stars tonight. Wish Cameron White could still play.

Ed Cowan looks to have forced the selectors into picking him with the one currency that cant be ignored forever. Runs & stacks of them.

On White, remember when he was talked up by plenty as good enough to be a test batsman & even possible Australian skipper. :hihi

It was a really entertaining game last night. The highlight for me was the miked up Warnie talking through his deliveries. This guy is still a genius with the ball. The way he talked through getting McCullum out was sensational. He was predicting the shots McCullum would play to each ball and he got him out exactly how he said he would.

You can read about it on this link.

I thought Watson is fit as well?

Watson should not be an automatic selection as a batsman only. His figures over the last 12 months or so are no better than Ponting or Hughes'.

Hasn't played for a long while and wasn't batting well before he got injured.

It would be a disgrace if Cowan can't get a game.

How Harris ,Marsh , Watson & anyone in their circumstances , are considered for selection in back to back Tests without having played any recent shield / 4 day games defies logic .

Cowan in for Hughes but Khawaja would be stiff to miss ,an undeserving sacrifice for the sake of change, selectors unwilling to make a call on underperforming seniors . Captain would be better off ,& perhaps have more authority , if he wasn’t a selector.
