How Harris ,Marsh , Watson & anyone in their circumstances , are considered for selection in back to back Tests without having played any recent shield / 4 day games defies logic .

Cowan in for Hughes but Khawaja would be stiff to miss ,an undeserving sacrifice for the sake of change, selectors unwilling to make a call on underperforming seniors . Captain would be better off ,& perhaps have more authority , if he wasn’t a selector.

Marsh back before he's fit or even had a hit - joke
Khawaja dropped ahead of Hussey or Ponting - joke
The return of Ben "Wicketless" Hilfenhack - joke

Hope Christian & Cowan both have blinders and keep Robot Watson out for good.

Please dont tell me hilfenhaus got selected because of his 4 overs the other night.

Selectors drop the rookies not the seinor players still shows they play favorites.

im thinking the ashes in mid 2013 unless rain intervenes we are going to cop a 5-0 thrashing.

Ed Cowan looks to have forced the selectors into picking him with the one currency that cant be ignored forever. Runs & stacks of them.

On White, remember when he was talked up by plenty as good enough to be a test batsman & even possible Australian skipper. :hihi

Ed Cowan eh, another New South Welshman.

Hilfenhaus is certainly a shock. Looks like we are gearing up for a Masters game with so many old blokes.

Has Ponting taken advice from Mitch Farmer or something? Blackmail to CA?

Cowans story is a good one. Couldnt make the squad at NSW, but was targetted on a multi year contract by Tasmania. With the help of cricket Tasmania's great ability to get the most out of its players Ed has since transformed himself into the premier opener in domestic. Hope he does well.

BTW his book is a great read for any cricket follower, it might seem mundane but it was an excellent read following the weird life of a state cricketer. Ed will be one of the sports best journos when his playing days finish.

On Hilfy, he's only 28. Best years still ahead of him. Everyone seems to be writing him off on here, exactly how mch has everyone seen this current season?

His Ashes were woeful, but he has added at least 2 yards of pace and changed his action to be back where he was when the leading wicket taker from both teams in the ashes series prior. Mark Waughs words that leysy just read support this.

Whether that is good enough against Indias gun batsmen who knows, but a lot writing him off early ILO.

Not writing him off, simply don't think he has done enough to deserve a recall but doubt he will play anyway.

Hilfy 19 wickets at 28 this season. Herrick 33 @25.

I agree that Starc will probably nudge Hilfy out - mainly as he is a lefty. Overall, don't reckon bowling is the issue these days.

Let's hope that the batting camp did wonders for Ponting, Hussey, Haddin, Clarke...

The thing that Hilfenhaus brings when he is bowling well is genuine swing with the new ball, especially outswing to right handers. The problem for him in the past is that when that swing goes he has become pedestrian.
India will probably have 6 right handers in their top 7,with Gambhir the only leftie, and I suspect that is why he has been picked. If he is bowling well I would play him ahead of Starc but its a close call.

Agree. When Hilfy is bowling well he is a difficult proposition. Has a surprisingly mean bouncer when his pace is up. We are having a wet spring/summer, reckon there is a likelyhood of suitable swinging conditions for this test. I would be playing him in front of Starc for sure.

Thats the key....keeping his pace up. Seems from reports he is back bowling in the 140kph range which he needs to stay at.

I would also play him before Starc...Starc is still a good prospect, but is rough around the edges at the moment. He is likely to release the pressure that the other bowlers build up. I think Hilfy will be more disciplined in his line and length than Starc and therefore should play.

I agree. Starc needs more time.
