Troy Simmonds
Simmonds has been serviceable in his five years at Richmond, but has often struggled with injury. His major asset has always been his work around the grounds and his ability to rack up possessions, as he oftens gets smashed in the hitouts. However, it seems that so far this season the 12 years (or so) of playing in the ruck has taken its toll, and he is not at his peak physically and is seriously lacking with both hand and foot skills.
Verdict: Retire in 2009
Nathan Brown
Brown has brought plenty of entertainment to the Tiger faithful since arriving all those years ago, yet he has never really been able to re-capture his spectacular form since that horrific leg injury. IMO what he is in the side to do is play as a goalsneak and kick 2 or 3 goals per game, and if he is not providing that, then it is better to offer the place in the side to a developing player. I just don't see the value in Brown racking up 20 - 25 useless possessions and finishing with 1 or 0 goals.
Verdict: Retire in 2009
Kane Johnson
Johnson has battled injuries over the last 18 months and has seen his skills deteriorate rapidly. Once again, he was serviceable as Captain, but I can't see him progressing with a significant role in the team beyond this season. For his sake, I hope he plays a decent number of games in what is most likely to be his last year.
Verdict: Retire in 2009
Matthew Richardson
To this day Richo's effort and ability astounds me. At 34 years of age, he still manages to appear to be the most talented player on our list, which is why I believe he should hang around at least until the end of next year. He brings so much to the team on and off the field and I can't imagine how many Tiger supporters there are out there who turn up each and every week just to see him play.
Verdict: Retire in 2010/11
Joel Bowden
IMO Bowden has been a tremendous player over his career and has acted as a superb role model off the field as well. Many called for his retirement last year, but I believe that now is the best time to pass the torch onto the likes of Kelvin Moore. Appreciate his efforts (and his 44 possessions today), but it's time to retire.
Verdict: Retire in 2009
Ben Cousins
We are yet to see him pull through a match unscathed and/or provide a best-on-ground performance, having only played one game so far. His future rests solely on whether or not he can stay drug-free, and whether he will be able to get on the park. Everybody knows that when fit he is a gun player, but we can only persist for so long.
