Talk about culture this week, perennial topic applied to any long-term unsuccessful side. Richmond used to have a tremendous culture. Tough, uncompromising, team play. One of the best. Its slipped over a lot of years to where it needs a rebuild, as Rawlings rightly pointed out.
The change in St Kildas culture this year shows how quick you can turn it around with the right approach and factors. Another perenially flawed culture that would tend to hold them near the bottom, or stop them taking the next step, the final step when looking like contenders.
Something that really stood out to me on the weekend, was St K's goal celebrations, especially Schneiders'. Kicked some absolute rippers. Didn't even smile, no leaps into the air, just a minimal acknowledgment of teamates and on with the game. Thats a manifestation of a side that has its eyes on the prize, focussed.
Contrast with us, McMahaons goal after the siren, the 2 worst sides in the worst game, celebrate like its a prelim win. Constant beef of mine. Collingwood is another side that celebrates first half goals in non-big games way too enthusiastically.
We need to work on ours, obviously, St Kilda have so far shown what can be done when you genuinely want to change it.
