Cuz offered new contract

He deserves a new contract for 2010. I would be thinking a base of $250k with a heap of incentives making a total pay packet of $400k very attainable.

I say give him a 3 year deal which can swap over to a coaching role if his body doesn't hold up

Agreed, but I'd offer him a one year deal, with a two year assistant coaching role for when he hangs us the boots. Offer him the same deal again at the end of next next year if he continues to play on. For each year he plays, he knows he that has a future with the club when he retires. The coach should also utilize his leadership skills as an on-field coach (or 3rd runner).

Actually just out of interest, I remember Rugby League doing something a few years back about clubs moving players into extremely highly paid assistant roles once they had retired ... Do the AFL have any salary cap issues with similar scenarios?

Say if you signed Nick Riewoldt for 200k a year for the last 4 years of his career than made him an assistant at 1 mill per year for example, would the AFL have an issue with that?

Dont believe theres a salary cap for coaches.
If you paid someone like Riewoldt 200k per year I think the AFL would think thats suspicious and would investigate for rorting of the salary cap.

^ Mate, not so much a salary cap for coaches, but yeah more what you're getting at re: Rorting the cap

That was the exact concern in RL - That clubs had the ability to under pay players, then give them even only minor coaching/admin roles for extreme money - Essentially they saw that as a rorting of the cap

I've never really heard the AFL make mention of any similar concerns which had me wondering.

I believe it is something they monitor, along with club jobs spouses get.

Idea is anyone can do work, but the renumeration has to be equitable with the work being done. Thats my Bucks on $400k is not raising eyebrows, as its a reasonable market rate for a man of his background. However if it was $2.2m....

Back onto the topic of 'The Cuz' I have found out that one of my uncles who lives in WA has become a Tiger supporter, mainly due to Ben coming to Richmond. If the club gets onto WA people who are sick of a. Never getting to go to a West Coke game due to memberships/games always being sold out b. Fremantle c. Fremantle and d. West Coke and Fremantle

I think if the club really went hard in WA, including taking a 'home game' there as offered to the Kangaroos recently, we could make some real ground in attracting new supporters/ disenfranchised supporters to our great club.

Thoughts?

Great idea, I'm pretty sure we have a decent following in WA. Should pump up the Cousins factor and the fact we share the same colours as the state. Very keen to sell a home game there, and we seem to play well at Subiaco. Any new area of growth should be exploited.

Thanks mate, that's what I was looking for.

I'd definitly think it's something they would look at imo if we gave Ben a 3 year contract as someone suggested and then he retired after 1 and took his salary as a coach outside of the cap - Rather than having the contract paid out under the cap.

Not surprisingly Carlton did it with Greg Williams and Fraser Brown among others who were paid either assistant coaching fees and/or were given some sort of maintenance contract for Optus Oval post their playing days.

I agree K3 and it also has the appeal that we play Subiaco very well and have had some good wins over there.

Great decision by the list management, his experience and leadership has been invaluable in 2009, and I hope he can bring the same for 2010 and potentially beyond.

If he stays fit and focussed and off the gear, then he could well play as long as Robert Harvey or Richo
