A question for any professional or amateur psychologists, psychiatrists, behaviourists, sports gurus and know-it-alls...

What would be worse for the young lads that are now playing for Richmond. Reaching 9th spot and kicking themselves for the Dogs and Saints match, or making the 8 and getting thumped in our first finals match by a Geelong 07 type scoreline ?

Pretty sure the first round of finals pits teams as below. If we eclipse my expections and make the finals we wont be playing the Cats.

1st plays 4th
2nd plays 3rd
5th plays 8th
6th plays 7th

I much prefer to dream.

Make the finals then cause upsets for the whole of September.

someone hit me - wake me up a bit.

Either of the two, doesn't matter.

As long as the boys feel happy that they've done their best. Games are won & lost on many factors, controllable factors & chance. If they finish 9th then they should realise that they have to win more to make the finals. If they make the finals, then win or lose, then they learn from that and take the next step.

As long as the group itself have the desire to go all the way and never become satisfied with mediocrity, and as long as the other departments of the RFC do their job and keep putting good youngsters at the bottom of the list to put pressure on those above.

Ah, I'm too sentimental tonight.
The other thread has affected me.

i find it funny people lamenting the dogs game on the whole they were the better team it could easily have been a hiding.

if anyone took the time to look into finals results the general rule is 7th and 8th have been hammered in these games. and to top it of often these teams fail to make the 8 the next yr. its an exercise in mediocrity.

at the end of the day the only thing that will improve you as ateam is quality 7th or 12th whats the difference between these teams most yrs if your honest very little.

I think any finals experience is invaluable no matter what the result.

Better team they might have been but we should be lamenting it because we should have never let them come back. Could have easily been a hiding but it wasn't, instead we were 28 points up or whatever it was with only a few minutes left. Hopefully a learning experience.

I would prefer to go as far as possible. If nothing else - in a declining economy - it is only going to become more difficult to attract sponsors and marginal members. It goes without saying that a vibrant finish to the year will be crucial for these areas. So long as the football dept remain realistic as to where we are at and don't think we are "Top 4" material next year.

actually in the last 5 yrs teams finishing 7/8th have won 5 out of 10 elimination finals. in that time 5out of 8 have made the finals the following year. plus syd and adelaide this year looking likely. of the 3 that missed one was pt adelaide who missed 2006 then made the grand final 2007, and one was the doggies who missed last year and are looking good this year. the only team to fall right away has been the demons. but sorry we shouldnt let facts get in the way.

Loving your work Brodders. Keeping clawsy honest. ;)

I don't expect it but I'll be ecstatic if we make the 8 with the youth we are currently playing.

Good work matey!

In relation to the original question, I'd take 8th spot EVERY time over 9th! If you cop a hiding you just have to toughen up and learn from it.

That's a very comprehensive response, craw. How's the humble pie taste?

Finals or nothing.

Don't want to see any of our lads hosting the Footy Show.........

Get the monkey off our back!

I'm tired of hearing:

"Richmond have only made one finals series since 1995" :blah

As someone corretly pointed out we would play 5th

Looking like Swans or Pies!

On the right day we can run with either of them,

but win or lose - it's better than finishing 9th >:(
