You still hold the title of the best thread ever on PRE Ready. :rofl

Even if I stumbled into it when Clay gambolled off to rural and regional Victoria.

We shall never see its likes again...

I'm gonna take a different tact to others. Yes our best 5 players will remain the same almost every year, but if you're talking most important, I'm gonna say the following:

1. J Schulz
2. D Rodan
3. P Bowden
4. T Simmonds
5. A Krakouer

WHY?!?! you might be screaming. Well, I think we need these 5 guys to step up and perform better than they have at any time during their careers over the next season, if we are to take the next step up. Sure Johnno, Cogs, tucky Richo and Gas will all be crucial, but we need the next tier of guys to start putting their hands up if we are going to be a threat to the competition.
Schulz needs to make the CHB position his own, Rodan must provide relief for the on ball brigade - as well as kick 15-20 goals for the year. Krakouer is the same - he must start earning his paycheck. Simmonds - if we are to win games we must continue to have first use of the ball. Simmo and my boy Knobel did this well in the first half of the year, we need them to keep that form going for the next 6 months. Lastly, Paddy. If Paddy can take a HFF position and kick 30 goals for the year, he'll give Richo some relief. The whole forward line relies on someone stepping up and providing more than one target - he has the talent to do it, but does he have the discipline?

Probably not what people were expecting, but it might keep some conversation going

Great 5 General, I like your way of thinking we know what our best 5 can do but we next the next group to stand up.

Yep, I was thinking along the same lines as you General, we know how important, and what our best group are capable of but its through our second and third tier players taking some of the pressure off that we will improve our performance. So for mine it's
Schulz. If he can hold CHB and release our running playmakers off the backline------bloody brilliant.

D Rod. Giving an extra option through the middle and that burst of excitement.

Sprinkles. Off a back flank or maybe loose running midfielder, just from some of the little bits I have seen of him he seems to have the poise and balance in his game that he takes a half step or props at the right moment to give himself time and room to find an option to deliver to, priceless at the speed the game is played nowadays.

Pettifer. If we are to play the free flowing attacking style of footy that Plough wants then the Pettrified One that certain posters love to bag needs to step up and have at least as good a year as 05 and if he improves some more then HALLELUJAH !!!! His delivery into the forward line and his finishing from the forward arc are excellent, and we need him to ensure we don't expect miracles from Browny every week in his comeback season.

Dare I say it--------------------------------- will I get howled into a dark and dusty corner never to post my humble opinion again????? Ahh stuff it, if you've got a yap open it and let em know where you're comin from.

Tivendale. Yep, it's obvious when you stop laughing and think about it. If Tivvers can recapture some form and confidence an experienced, powerfull running back flank or wingman with a raking left boot can cut opposition sides to ribbons.
If he sparks it could be awesome and if he doesn't he will be delisted ( no one will trade for him ) and my humble opinion will be just that.
Be interesting to put this thread back up at years end and see if the second stringers mentioned step up or sink along with their backers.

1 coughlan- take coughlan and tuck out of the team and we just wont win games the only other hard at it ball winner we have is johnson.
2 tuck- see coughlan
3 brown- no brown no forward line as was the case last yr struggled to kick more than 12 goals a game without him.
4 johnson- see coughlan
5 gaspar- as much as i hate to say it has shown himself to be a very good negator when fit. could never call him elite because of his skills but we have no one else to do his role and will struggle down back without him.

Always interested in your reasoning and perspective Claw but am a bit surprised how conservative your 4 and 5 choices are.
Have ye no faith in our younger brigade?

there are a few kids who hopefully go on to become our most valuable players well they bloody well better or we are up the creek without a paddle.
the thread said regardless of potential past deeds trade value etc the loss of any of the above will see us more than likely struggle to win lose 2 or 3 or all 5 and we will get belted.this will not be the fault of the kids but the fault of the middle tier players who have always failed to step up when needed.

Yep - hard to argue with that.

I agree but we are at the cross-roads so far as the older group are concerned. As much as we need them at their best the likes of Richo, Johnno, Gaspar and Bowden have little upside going for them. Unless others step up and take pressure off them we will struggle to improve our competitiveness during 2006.

Call me an optimist but I feel Deledio will pick up where he left off last season and continue his meteoric rise. In other words have no "2nd year blues". As Jack Dyer used to say "if they're good enough, they're old enough".
