Daniel Jackson talks to PRE

What position do you want to play in 2005?
This year I am happy to play predominantly in the back line where I have already spent most of my footballing life as I feel most at home there. But at the same time it would be good to have a run in the midfield at some stage just to see how I fit in.

Who do you look up to at the club?
All the senior players at the club have something to offer in regards of advice/ insight regarding aspects both within the game but also outside of footy. It is hard to choose just one player at the club that I look up to. Joel Bowden, Richo and Cambo were all really helpful for my first few games, helping me out when they could or just giving words of wisdom and encouragement. Duncan Kellaway was a great inspiration with both his courage on the field and his attitude off and I was glad to have been able to play with him for that short time.

What's the best piece of advice you've been given?
Do what you enjoy doing and make the most of life.

What are you looking forward to the most for next season?
Really looking forward to seeing how all the changes and hard work that has been put in over summer pays off. Most of all I am looking forward to finally winning a game in the yellow and black as the six I have played in were all losses.

What are your interests outside of footy?
I always try to be doing something outside of footy because I am so used to being busy. This year I opted to go to uni instead of deferring just so I don’t get too bored later in the year however I am only studying one subject which accounts for three hours a week, so there is still plenty of time for footy. I also enjoy simply relaxing which for me usually entails playing xbox, socialising with friends or teaching myself the guitar, although most of my time off is spent with my lovely girlfriend who always looks after me.

You attained a very high enter score. Congratulations on that. Do you have any idea what you would have studied at uni if you weren’t playing AFL? Do you have intend to study in the near future, and if so what?
This year I am studying a Bachelor of Commerce at Melbourne Uni part time and at the rate that I plan on doing it I’ll still be doing that in six years, which works out well if I’m playing footy for that time. If I hadn’t been drafted I would have probably studied a double degree in Commerce/ Arts but there was simply not enough time due to the commitments of being a full time athlete.

Did you expect to be drafted by Richmond and how did you feel when your name was called out?
My decision to nominate for the draft was made within 24 hours of the final deadline and I probably had about the same amount of time to make the decision. Richmond had approached my parents in the weeks leading up to the deadline and offered them a deal whereby if they drafted me I would be able to go to school and play school footy which was what I loved however I was not told about this deal until there was 48 hours left. The decision was pretty easy as it was such a good deal and therefore on the draft day I was expecting to get picked up and it was just a relief that it was in fact the tigers who chose me.

Have you always played football or did you prefer other sports?
As a youngster I actually played soccer for a number of years as my mum wouldn’t let me play any club footy other then Vic Kick as it was known back then because she thought I might get hurt! So I didn’t start playing footy properly until I was 14, which in retrospect was a good thing as it gave me a wider experience in other sports. At school I was a rower, runner and volleyballer and at the same time I’ve always been very active and have played most sports in one way or another.

Which team did you barrack for before coming to Richmond?
Unfortunately I grew up barracking for West Coast, apparently simply because I liked the colours as a youngster. However I was never a very passionate supporter and so it was not hard to leave them behind after I was drafted. In fact I never really watched or went to the footy that much and even now I’m probably not up to scratch in my knowledge of the game and other players.

Who has been the biggest influence on your football career to date?
I would have to say my schoolmates as they were the ones who got me playing footy down at the local club and at school and they were also the ones who helped grow my love for the game. There’s nothing better than the mate ship that comes with footy and that’s why I chose to play my final game for school instead of playing for the tigers.

What position did you play for Carey and what number did you wear?
I played all over the place for Carey but mainly centre half back, in the ruck or on ball and also full/ centre half forward and I was number 16.

Can you tell us about your running and other sporting history?
My three main alternate sports over the years were soccer, rowing and running. I played soccer for 5 years when I was young and then always retained a liking for the game. I rowed for Carey for 2 years before choosing to give it up to play more footy and I have found that rowing was a good way to develop a strong physique i.e. broader shoulders and chest. I was also a runner for the school athletics team for a number of years which I really loved doing. My events usually included the 100m, 400m the 800m and a little bit of hurdles. At the end of 2004 I was lucky enough to get the permission from the footy club to go to Sydney with our school team to compete in the national school championships, which we won.

Who were your boyhood sporting heroes?
I have always had a love for Muhammad Ali as most people do.

What is the highlight of your career so far?
First game. Can’t beat it yet, just the adrenalin and the excitement of it all.

Daniel what is your fastest time for the 100m and your highest jump in the high jump?
My athletics times were: 100m 11.05sec, 400m 49.60 sec, 800m 1min 59sec and high jump I think was around 1m 70 or 75cm.

What role does Terry WALLACE see for you in this and coming season?
Terry is happy to leave me in the backline for the year probably playing on smaller forwards in the pockets but he has also expressed interest in giving me an opportunity to have a run in the midfield at some stage.

Do you mix socially with any of the Tiger players and if so who?
I mix mainly with the other young guys around the club but also with some of the older ones. It’s great having such a big group of new young players around the club as it has allowed us to develop a strong bond which hopefully grows over the years and bring success back to the tigers.

Your thoughts & hopes for the future?
In the short term I personally would just like to have a consistent year in 2005 and learn/take in as much as I can, and hopefully see some success this year such as finals footy. In the long run I of course would love to see the Tigers win a premiership or two or three!

Last year your stats were 187cm-87kg. How much has your height and weight changed in your first year at Richmond?
I think my height is still the same but I now weigh 91kgs and will probably get a bit heavier throughout the year.

Thank you Daniel
