Danny Meyer?

Actually, speaking about Meyers, there's another Myer that seems to have disappeared during the season.

I remember watching a Tim Myers from WA, as I recall. He played extremely well as a 6'3-4" FB for the U17 Aussie team. I was expecting him to come through at the end of this season.

Anyone knowing his whereabouts, please post.
David Meyers wasnt it?

Good post Rayzor.
I don't wish to compare them too much but Krak has good skills and a touch of class too. :spin

Takes a fair bit more than that to be a top AFL player.

This is the crux of what I am getting with the poor man's Caracella comparison.
Phantom's correct, Caracella was a good player who played in 4 premierships but he was also a noted seagull. As you say I just hope we didn't select a pure flanker with dp12.
In saying that, I'm still even unsure of the role Meyer will play at Tigerland.

Yeah ToO, I think we're agreed in that we don't doubt his talent, just question exactly what type of player we've selected in Meyer and consequently where in the draft we picked him up.

As you say, time will tell... ;)

Meyer is one of those guys who won’t truly come into his own until we start to improve as a team. Right now he’s getting beaten from pillar to post trying to win a heap of contested possession, which with his body size is always gonna be difficult.

To take advantage of Meyer’s ability and skills, we need to get the ball out to him more, much in the same way the good teams of Essendon and Brisbane did with Caracella.

Once that happens, you’ll start to see the class act he is.

No doubt of the above Red, but in your opinion will he be able to take his turn in midfield in the future?

If not, do you reckon we paid over the odds at 12?

Why worry about it? Lets just give the kid time to develop his body and i'm sure the results will come. The way the game is being played and the direction the game is heading will suit meyer down to the ground. He'll be a very quick link player(how well would he go in the bulldogs line up).
As we improve, we'll end up playing the bulldogs run and carry game, this will be meyer's bread and butter.Super quick and skilful.
Imo the wait will be worth it!

One game does not make a season or define a player but most pundits would agree that Meyer's best game to date was against the cats at the cattery playing down back ..carrying the ball..reading the game well and most importantly delivering the pill with speed and precision to the forward line.It then came as somewhat of a surprise when after that he was sent to starvation corner where he was forced to fight for the scraps and put up with the rubbish delivery that came in from our midfield.Perhaps this is part of the learning process it just seemed a bit odd at the time.IMO he will become a valuable part of the midfield rotation

in a way red you are saying hes a seagull cant win his own ball. my disliking of him has always been body shape and the fact hes never been a big possesion getter.
like you i think he will improve if he can get his body right he does chase and harrass has very good skills and is quick.
i just hope wallace doesnt go down the really skinny quick outside player path again this yr we have enough already.

I agree with Red 100% on Meyer an I have no doubt with MATURITY he is going to be a very very good modern day footballer who will be able to play just about anywhere, though I see him as a HF for his best possie but no reason he cant play in the middle at times an even a sweeping half back role.
I think for some silly reason, probally due to his high skill level peolple dont think Danny is real hard, couldnt be further from the truth this kid has plenty of guts not a kid who's hard at the man but he sure is hard at the ball, also another misconception for mine is his size though not huge he aint that little an when he runs out for round 1 after 3 pre seasons I think we will see a totally different Danny Meyer he sure has the breeding to fill out ;D.Danny to me is the type of player who can win you big matches an when he believes it look out.

Top stuff CC..... its all about the belief to be able to back urself in. When Riachie Tambling, Danny Meyer, Jay Schulz and Adam Pattison all believe they are good enough ...THEN we will see wat these kids are made of...... for me its all about confidence! confidence! confidence!

Meyer will be Meyer. Wanganeen will be Wanganeen. Cousins will be Cousins. This comparing will only do Danny more harm and only lead us to be more disappointed in the future. We all know the potential he has and the talent is there. Patience is the key, and unfortunately RFC has been the victim of a lack of it over the past 20 years. I think people forget he has been injury plagued since he came to Richmond. I'm sure we will see plenty more of Danny in 07 with a bigger body, and with one year left on his contract, I'm sure he'll be fighting to engrave a reputation at the top level.

Good point #7 but if using Brownys style of play whn he go's forward as a comparison to DM's its not a bad one Very strong on the lead for his size like Browny, very clean when ball hits the deck an uncanny goal sense an very good snap shot. One thing where I think DM has Browny well an truly covered is set shots I rate DM as one of the top few at the Club

Well done Checkside, it is David Myers.

He distinguished himself by winning the Ron Barassi Medal in the early 2006 AIS v game v Ireland.
He's a tall defender from the Perth FC.
So where is he now?

One of the things that was in Meyer's favour as an U18 prospect was that he looked like he might furnish. He was lean but he looked like a boy.

He's pretty much an inside player. He can win a contest if he can get to it and hold position.

Danny hasn't furnished. He's listed at 70kg ATM. For the old-timers that's eleven stone. How could he play inside football at AFL level? He'd be killed. And he knows that. Unless he can gain some body mass (a lot) his talent is academic.

FWIW if he can get some muscle I'd like to see him learn the caper on a hbf at senior level (as he's done when I've watched him at Coburg).

On the pace issue, go back over tapes of Danny in side-by-side foot races at AFL level. Have a look at him when he's got a start. He has balance but is just run of the mill for zip IMO. Maybe not even that quick. I read and hear a lot about his pace but I don't see it.

I was all for taking him. I posted as much at the time (albeit with some reservations about a couple of others that might go later) but he hasn't filled out to date. And that is what's holding him back.

Next year is a big one for the young man but I haven't given up on him.

Just to correct a few who have said Meyer is 70kg. This is not the case, contrary to the stats on RFC website. He is 76kg according to other websites. Does anyone know what an 183cm 70 kilo body looks like? You can see he is not 70kg. And the time he spent injured, Im sure he was spending time on the weights. Another pre-season and I think the weight issues that some suspect will be alleviated.

iirc Giansiracusa of the bullies was in the system for 3-4yrs before he really established himself, imo Meyer is going to take about the same amount of time, I'm also sure that it will be worth the wait. I'm hoping he will turn out a bit like Ryan Griffen of the bullies who is definitely a star in the making.

Yep, Meyer, I believe, was 76kg at the beginning of the 2006 season. I don't know what weight he attained by season's end.

About what Meyer looked halfway through the 2005 season.

Imagine Robert Lamb circa 1973.

Showing your age Phanto!

Geez, wouldn't it be nice to have people arguing over whether I was 70kg or 76kg!! :-[
