PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

TW,
Been a Tiger for nigh on 50 years, and can still remember the good old glory days, although they are fading.
According to literally hundreds if not thousands of posts on this forum, you should walk into Punt Road tomorrow and hand over the keys, however I am one of the few who would still like to see what you can do by end of 2009.

I believe from a supporter's point of view that you and GM's recruitment efforts have some big question marks, however this letter is about something more basic and fundamental and that is respect. The recruitment letter may follow ;D

One of my only wishes is that you take the bull by the horns and start to show the players who's in charge here. I understand you have many many people to satisfy apart from the ferals ;D however I believe the players and in particular the senior group, are taking you for a ride. We get all emotional etc and talk about pride, playing for the guernsey etc but in today's football all these guys are here for is to play football as that is what they are extremely well paid to do. They are supposedly professionals, therefore if they screw up, pull them off the ground and let them sit on the pine for a while to think about it and if they sook about it, they don't go back on. If they keep on about it perhaps a week or two in the ressies might change their perspective as I assume they don't get match payments if they don't play seniors, or at least they lose a fair proportion of it.

Many times yesterday, basic errors were on display for over 70,000 fans and a lot more at home on replays etc. The list is long but when I played footy, if I didn't chase my opponent, or put in more than a 30% effort going to spoil, or not protect a teammate when they have the ball, or forget to tell my team mate to offload it as he's about to get run down etc etc etc, I can guarantee you I had time to sit and think about it within 30 seconds. It was just drilled into us, training drill after training drill.

Many of today's footballers apparently need to be handled differently as their frail egos may shatter, however the old adage "if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen" is easily solved by "don't put yourself into a situation where the heats is always on you."

I'm not trying to tell you how to coach, as you and I are in different worlds in that regard, however all I ask is that you demand the respect of the playing group and if they don't show it to you, they're gone. You have been paid to do a job that in any mans world is a tough ask, getting the RFC back on its feet. You have been well paid to date to do this and have nearly two more years at this rate to see the project through, but you need the players to back you and your game plan, and all I've seen thus far is more of the same crap that the club has seen for twenty years. If the players can't get the concept after three years then out they have to go. You have been entrusted with the job, the players as professionals do as they're paid and instructed to do.

If, as I've heard, Richo can't be contained to play in a certain area, then by all reasoning he is not playing for the team, let him sit some game time out until it sinks in. If Pettifer refuses to put in 100% when chasing and putting in second efforts, he needs time to sit and think about it. Browny? Perhaps his best is behind him, perhaps his skill level is better than VFL by a country mile, but he shouldn't have automatic selection in the seniors just because he is Nathan Brown. Bowden, Tuck, Johnson, Tambling, etc etc need to understand that if you screw up you will cop some flak and not just on PRE, but by the coaching panel, and if it keeps up, then offload them. The club cannot be dictated by the players peformances, we are laughed at everywhere.

The look of pain on some of the kids faces around me in the members area watching that drivel will never leave me. Nor the sneers and jeers from Collingwood members.

Terry, show this group that crap will not be tolerated and prove it. You've said many times that playesr who don't perform will face the music, but frankly it sounds very hollow. Nothing changes unless it's a kid who gets dropped. None of the senior list bear the brunt of poor performances and they are the ones who should first, then the kids and if performances are still crap well then the blowtorch is on you guys in the coaching box.

C'mon you're the boss, let's start the new generation this week, show the players, supporters and the other clubs that these insipid efforts are over, the new era of the Tiger is born. The players who want to be part of it, have to show they want part of it.

GO TIGES!!!!
