PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

A real positive I saw last night was the emergence of a top tiger defence albeit it will be a seven player defence. i went to the game looking forward to see Thursty play and noted to those with me that I was confident in Willy being competitive and it was so bizarre as he had played 8 games, was 10kilos underweight and was coming off a knee reco. In the end a truly amazing performance. Fingers crossed for this kid as he can develop into a mighty backman.

Polak at CHB or loose man in the hole was terific - 22 years old - needs to get stronger and a bit fitter and boy then watch him go. I was a supporter of Polak to the tiges despite some reservations on his game 'mindset'. I always knew he has great hands but his ground play and quick hands and solid footskills have surprised me. Could turn out to be anything.

Then we have the modern defenders around these two, Bowden as third tall can now get downfield more often. Little Kingy has a little bit of the Kellaway courage and dash and endevaour in abundance. More importantly has pace and mental toughness to do the job at back pocket but also the confidence to run forward with purpose.

Raines tough hard fast and likes to run and carry - needs to make better decisions but ATM positives outweigh negatives.

Newman - a gem by foot - if allowed to zone off with others playing the harder tags will make the right decision and deliver 9 times out of ten.

Deledio - ostensibly as a sixth forward dropped back or HBF on the worst forward - might win a brownlow from this possie. With a seven man defence as you get on top you can roll the dice more and drift forward more often - As he showed yesterday he can exploit his strengths pace and bouncing and long accurate kicking from that position and can also kick goals. In the red midst of yesterday's loss and to be hypercritcial perhaps he should have gone back to take his kick on 50 when he marked and we were 12 points up with 4 minutes to go. Even a point or locking it up down back may have been enough - but he will learn and get better and you cannot fault his game otherwise - terrific.

The good thing is other than Bowden - it is a young defence who can stay together for the best part of a decade. I'd imagine Bowden's position will eventually be taken by Casserly or JON or perhaps Luke depending on match ups. White and Meyer may also be running options down back. In any event it looks like we may have the launching pad for the run and carry game in this formative but exciting defence.
