Defensive players

I think this is were we lack we have guys who can run & carry create but not sure have many who can lock down the opposition especially down back with the small to mid size guys. Newman Raines McMahon even Bowden etc are backline runners but play loose who are are tight players King is one?

Polo yes, Sugar can lock down opponents, and Jacko can on the right person (just don’t mention St Kilda)

this is not our problem

our problem is winning 60% of the ball in the middle
then converting 70% of those into goals

guys that can get it and use it well by getting it to guys that can convert

sadly we have not enough of these

i don't think we lack small to mid size defensive guys. i think wallace instructs these guys to try and run off their players and create from the half back line.

this worked better when we had a more reliable/defensive/experienced backline including kellaway and gaspar. holes were exposed when they went missing.

that being said i thing we're only one quality tall defensive player away from having a pretty decent backline

The best defence is midfield possession, and defensive efforts in the forward line. I reckon our defence has done OK given the pressure it's been put under, game after game.

I think the days of having multiple purely defensive players are numbered. A backline containing Gaspar, Bulluss and Kellaway x 2 is not likely in the future.

The best teams usually have one big defender (Glass, Rutten, Egan) but many other running options (Barry, Scarlett, Hunter) who can hurt teams.

We need a big defender (badly) and I'm not sure who we have coming through. I thought this was the role that Polak was intended for though I am not sure now.
