Deledio needs defensive skills (merged)

As much as I love watching the silky skills of Deledio, tonight I noticed many, many occasions when he stood off a contest on the ground when he really, really needed to help. He could have chased a blue bloke that was no more than 10m away instead of standing watching. He did (or didn't) put in when he was needed. Just compare his defensive efforts with Hartigan's. My goodness he stood out in his efforts to lock the ball in when he needed to and to chase when he needed to.

As good as Deledio's delevery skills are, he let too many moments pass when defensive pressure was needed. It also seemed like he was stuffed more often than not as he failed to run and contribute to a contest when he needed to.

Am I expecting too much of him? Last year he had a 38% contested possesion rate, pretty good for a slightly built first year player. This year, his contested possesion rate is down to 33%! Mmmmm, what's going on?

Re: Deledio needs defensive skills

He's possibly spending less time on ground too, as they try rotate players and keep them fresh. He was in the scum yesterday and mentioned how he'd like to play inside a bit more, but Terry wants him outside.

You're not expecting too much as far as defensive skills, but given he's 27 games into his career, he'll get better in that regard.

Re: Deledio needs defensive skills

Would also like to see Tambling chase a little more often, as I noticed on a couple of occassions last night where he was in striking distance & allowed the player to run past him. Otherwise I am pretty happy with the progress of these two kids.

Re: Deledio needs defensive skills

I thought tamblings chase and tackle in the third quarter (just before kellaway punched the ball out of defence resulting in a goal >:( ) was a great effort. He did that a couple of times today and I thought he was all right.

Agree.

Brett Deledio

Superb effort in the 2nd quarter when he got three clearances out of the middle from a centre bounce.

Is there anything the young champ cannot do?

:clap

Re: Deledio needs defensive skills

Deledio doesn't need anything .

All he needs ae some half decent footballers around him so he can do his thing and cement his place as the best player in the comp!

I thought Tambling did a lot of chasing, he also did a lot of hard running, he may have been knackered on those occasions when he didn't chase. I'd like his tackles to stick. With him and Lids and Raines, Harts and even Hyde the side is getting quicker and will become deadly in the future as they adjust to the quick movement with the new quick kickout rule.

Re: Deledio needs defensive skills

Tambling looked a bit proppy at one stage, was feeling his hammy in the second Q.

Sshhhhhhh Andy, we don't want the Chicken Littles to come back again. Speaking of the game where's Gollum? Felt sure the little sneak would have something to say about the win.

Re: Deledio needs defensive skills

If you want to bag someone for not chasing I would point fingers at Rodan and Hartigan. On occassions each of them were assigned to Marc Murphy and simply just let him run away to space. From there he setup the next set of Carlton play.

Hear hear, it's hard to soar like an eagle when you're surrounded by turkeys.

Lids manages to do so on many occasions regardless.

Deledio , out of our entire list, is the least player im worried about. HE is a feakshow..... TW is playing him so smart... basically its 'GIVE HIM THE BALL!' Had 13 kicks last night and i dare say 13 were effective. His defensive side, like all young kids, will progress over time.... he will look at the tapes and see that some efforts he really could have chased harder etc.... overall couldnt be happier with this kid.... As for Richie... i thought his one % and chasing last night were far better than previously.... the guy has played 15 games or something stupid..... just watch him move across the ground - he is going to be a star no doubt about it.

I looked in the paper today and i think he only played like 85 minutes of the game, which is less than he was playing in his first year.

Will come with time Fudge, but I can see where you are coming from. Wouldn't worry too much about it though. Its common knowledge that the defensive side of James Hird's game is not that flash at times, but he's still a champion and Brownlow medalist.

If you want to see somebody that doesn't chase keep a close eye on Tucky. Chasing is not only about running after someone when they have the ball it's also about finding your man and manning up when the opposition team has the ball. The amount of times that Tucky's man peels off to get the next possession, or the one after that, and he is just jogging after him is infuriating to say the least. >:( >:(

as it would be for the opposition supporters of the team of which one of their players is watching as tuck racks of his 25 possesions and 8 clearances a game

get serious pomsta

Unless someone is trying to actually tag, not one midfielder in the AFL mans up. Lids is fine.
