Dennis Collins missing 1980 flag

Yes, there were a few smaller speedsters used by the Tiges during the year to increase the pace of the team.

The core group was Raines, Rowlings, Wiley, weightman & Bartlett

The secondary group rotated through the team included Paul Sarah from Geelong, Denis Collins from Carlton, George Brown from Footscray, Welshy from Hawthorn, Freame from the U19s. Might have been others too.

Still reckon Ian Scrimshaw was the unfortunate one. He'd certainly played well as a RR up untiul the GF. He was even in the best players in the Qualifying & Semi finals. Maybe it was thought that he lacked a yard or didn't provide enough of an advantage over Collingwood as some other players.

Anyway, it's all ancient history now,

Scrimshaw was unfortunate. Particularly when you think that Rowlings only came back for the GF (he did not play in the Finals against Carlton or the Cats and the previous 8 home and away games.)

Wouldnever happen now - but hey, we won - and that makes all the difference.

Collins got well and truly murdered by Wayne Schimmelbush in the home and away top of the ladder clash with North Melbourne, at the G. Collins was dragged and Weightman was used by Jewell on Schimma to quiet him. ( No shame in being beaten by Schimma I might add)
Tigers eventually won by 7 points, Collins in and out of the side after that, maybe the doubt had been planted in the selectors minds. Luckily Peter Welsh (another great Hawk reject like Rowlings) picked up Barham in the GF and had a brilliant game, even after Barham his opponent got injured.

Peter Welsh, Now that is a good story. was on the bench in the reserves a couple of weeks or so earlier

Woosha started the last game of the regular season on the bench in the Reserves. Was extremely tough and hard at it and was happy to create a bit of mayhem, worth his weight in gold! Played some good footy in the finals so was far from a passenger. The Reserves had many good players that year, Woosha was only one of them! Guess it is all about opportunity and being in the right place at the right time.

I agree Phantom, Ian Scrimshaw was extremely unlucky. Daryl Freame on the other hand was extremely lucky.

What about Kim Kershaw who was a giant ruckman - read in the paper last weekend that he has a daughter who is now a world famous model! I would bet she is tall as Kim was about 6ft 10.

He actually played every game except one from Round 6 to the Qualifying Final win over Carlton - his final VFL match at the age of 27.

I couldn't believe what I read in the Hun today.
Dennis Collins supposed to go and see Rudi Webster (the shrink Tony Jewel and Percy Jones blued over) on 1980 GF eve.
Instead took his girlfriend to the movies so TJ said if thats how you feel about playing in a GF I'll put Daryl Freame in!!
I tell you what. He would want to have married her and still be married to her. :inlove
What a DH.
He proved his DH credentials beyond resonable doubt when playing for carlton, he walked up behind a raging robbie muir & tapped him on the shoulder, the rest is highlight fodder.
he deserved to be knocked out for that stupid derryn hinch beard of his.
