AFL clubs fork out $16,800 to every unproven player in the national draft and pay the same amount when that player makes his AFL debut.
A further $13,100 is paid when the player chalks up his 10th senior match and another $13,100 if the player is registered for a second season, a significant $59,800 in total.
Players taken in the national draft are entitled to a minimum two-year contract, almost guaranteeing the last payment.

This helps explain why players are not just 'given a run' late in the season. Damned expensive!
