PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

I like to analyse games through looking at the data, mainly to try to validate what I think I'm seeing. Parts of the last two games have looked very different to what we are used to seeing from the Tiges.

From 2017 to 2020 my barometer stat for the Tiges was average speed in defence. Being better (or worse) than our opposition in this stat had an almost perfect correlation with wins and losses. i.e. our success was primarily about pressure.

This year it has changed, now I'm drawn to our uncontested possessions.

2020 finals avg - 165 (adjusted as the games were 10% shorter - actual was 151)
2021 losses avg - 203
2021 wins avg - 231
2021 last two games (wins) - 255

We have completely changed our game style this year to cope with AFL rule changes designed to screw us i.e. the man on the mark rule that opens up diagonal kicks, and the new defensive interpretations i.e. almost impossible to get a holding the ball, incorrect disposals including throws allowed - meaning our pressure game whilst not redundant, is not as effective as an all game tactic.

We now need to play like Geelong, because that is who sHocking barracks for. Fortunately its back to the future for Dimma - he was part of the Hawks coaching staff that started this style back in 2008.
