Disappointed in Mark Williams as a potential coach

I'm not particularly fond of getting him to Richmond, his Port Adelaide side massively underachieved, winning the minor premiership 2-3 times and choking in finals repeatedly.

When we start having a succession of elite coaches who fail us I will worry about which is the best for us, right now I would take any elite coach. My definition of such being a coach who has done two things 1) achieved a premiership and 2) developed a club to have more than 2 dominant years in win/loss.

This thing about chocking in finals is harsh. It was spot on at the time, but the fact is, you can only win the game you are put out there to win. They choked BEFORE winning the premiership and he was able to get them over that and lead them on to success, that takes a lot of management as their choking got really bad.

Let's not forget he also got them into a premiership last year when no one expected them to do so and many even thought they would be bottom 4.

I don't agree with this, sides letting them in or winning etc. A coaches job is to put his team in the best possible position to capitalise, Williams has always done that. I don't get your point.

I'd be happy for our coach next year to get us into a premiership against Geelong only for them to not take us seriously and us win it. Wouldn't you?

I think the word "any" is a little concerning, plus the definition of "elite" is subjective. Denis Pagan fits your criteria, not sure I'd want him at the club as our coach, nor do I want Sheedy.

Williams along with Malthouse or if we are going greener a Hardwick would all be good to head up the club. None of these would take any *smile* from poor performers and would have no hesitation in dropping so called big named players if need be and at the same time develop the younger players. Probably shouldnt say that in terms of Hardwick as he is unproven as yet but my impression of the guy would be along the same lines as the other two.

pagan has not been elite since the 90s. Williams is an excellent coach still
I'm still not convinced that he's that excellent, personally I'd rather go for a rookie coach like Hardwick over Williams

Fair point, but I don't consider them elite anymore in the modern game. Neither is coaching anymore for good reason. Nice try, are you a Herald Sun journalist? ;)

Talk about running of your line to attack the player and not the ball. :hihi

I think you will find a very small minority would vouch for a coach not currently in the system, surprised you even contemplated i could mean as much.

Great post, I share your sentiments. Like many Hardwick is appealing but great to see you state Hardwick is unproven as many assumptions are being made about him.

There is a chance, no matter how much he is liked, he could be a "favorites" coach and not play on merit. Good to see a realistic post with respect to a unproven coach.

Hardwick is a must have in the interview process for sure but a lot of assumptions are being made of him.

Think you just proved MB's point :rofl

Agree with ya DD on Williams. He's the coach for a particular problem. W'll be lucky to get him though, but it could well push Malthouse our way, rightly of wrongly..............
